Started a program with my doctor and a another facility to donate and store up my own blood if I should need it in the future.

Been doing this for a couple years now and wondering does blood go bad over time?

We had a power spike earlier this week and electricity went out for a while. I didn't realize the gfci on the outside fridge tripped and the fridge was off for most of an entire day.

Yes, once out of the body it has to be refrigerated or it will go bad

What’s the matter? Are you too good for other people’s blood?

It will go bad inside your body if you die. Found this out from Interview with the Vampire.

Are you a rare blood type? If no then what’s the advantage of doing this?

Woah. How does this work? Your body only has a certain amount.

I’d imagine so. Otherwise we would have blood drives at the graveyard.

Yes, even if frozen.

Frozen blood can be stored ten years, but freezing blood is a poor way of storing it. Generally speaking, we store blood in the refrigerator, where we can store it for up to 42 days.

Just check the "Best Before" date. I've found you can still use it up to two days after that date, but after that it starts to smell.

Were you the TA that taught my 1st Aid class at college? Trainer for one of the sports teams?

One of the freshmen asked about "running a pint low" if people donate/store their blood.

I literally got out my books and highlighted a lot of stuff for the TA so he wouldn't be "misleading" his classes in the future on about half the course material.

For those unaware, your bone marrow produces blood cells (conversely the spleen functions to remove/recycle blood cells as part of its purpose).

Packed red cells have a shelf life around 42 days. They remain viable in body around 90 days.

Plasma can be frozen and kept for many months

Platelets, just 5 days. Was horrified at that stat, but it gets me in to donate every 2 weeks.

My pawpaw used to say we had bad blood when we'd act a fool.
