Trying to replace a beach trip next year for something different. I would to try white water rafting with family. I have an 18 year old son and 20 year old daughter.

We would be rookies. Where do you guys recommend, and time of year. Also, whats the best place where other things are going on?

We’ve done two trips in Colorado
The one that goes under the royal gorge was the best

Would love to do the one in North Carolina or tenn one day

Typically spring and early summer will provide better rafting because you will be rafting snow melt. We rafted in Colorado and the guide that had been doing it for years said that he never gets tired of rafting the Numbers. You could also go out of MOab and raft the Colorado river through canonlands national park for a multi day rafting trip

Lower Deschutes. Two class 4 rapids in the mix, sometimes 3 depending on the flow. Would be exhilarating for newbies.

YouTube oak springs rapids on the lower Deschutes for the highlight of the float. Boxcar rapid is another.

Can turn the trip into a vacation of Central Oregon.

Several companies in Maupin, Oregon. I roll with HDRO. Make sure you specify you do not want to be in the safety boat.

The safety boat will not go over Oak Springs.

Maupin isn't far from Hood River or Bend.

Lots going on in both cities.

I’ve been to Colorado in May and August and both trips were good water levels

Stay away from any where you have to do a ton of paddling if water levels are too low that becomes a work out

Lower Deschutes is dam controlled. No worries.

It's a sweet 4 hour float. With sections to jump in/swim and float and ride the rapids.

OP....they always have a groupon. I forgot to mention that.

Are you looking for multi-day trips? If so, your only options are really out west. I'd recommend Utah for the many other local things to do like National Parks.

If you're looking for something with a lot of options, but not a multi-day trip, consider Western NC around Bryson City. There are many rivers and the best one around is a short drive (Ocoee River). They also have the Nantahala (very cold water) for something smaller. NOC and ERA both have options to rent smaller boats for local runs (Pigeon is another great one) including kayaks if the kids are interested in that. NOC also has a ropes course and other activities beyond rafting.

Ocoee, Nantahala and Pigeon are all dam-release rivers so you can go any time of year, but I'd recommend late summer so it's still warm and you miss the "peak" season. Also, the guides are well-experienced by this time as well, so they know what's going on. Don't be afraid to request a guide that fits more your style (safe or wild).

If you're driving up to NC, be sure to stop in Helen, GA on the way.

Eagle river near vail is good too as well as Arkansas river. Been twice up there. Water was 38 degrees one year, in class V rapids, they said a guy died the previous week. You just have to follow the guides instructions and you’ll be fine... he is like a symphony orchestrator giving all kinds of orders.

Don’t go in august, it’s more of a float trip

Mackay River Trip

I went on a 5 day trip a couple years ago down the Middle Fork in Idaho and it was amazing. I wanna say it was a 99 mile rafting journey over the course of 5 days. Went in July and the weather was great overall. A little cold and rainy on day 1, but when starting at the top of the mountain, it was expected.

Great guides, great food, great scenery.

Me and some buddies did a trip a few years ago to WV and stayed/rafted/climbed with Adventures on the Gorge.

We stayed in a cabin on the property, rafted the Gauley River, and did a guided rock climbing day. It was a great time, but we went before school was out for the year...I could see where that was a super family friendly place, and probably has lots of kids running around in the Summer. We are all in fairly decent shape, and the rafting was fun/challenging, and the rock climbing was a serious challenge.

Fayetteville, WV was a small town a few miles away with a few breweries and restaurants.

Also, right near there on the GA/SC border is my favorite of the bunch - the Chattooga. It’s got a few different 3-4 hour rafting options with up to Class IV rapids. It’s a natural and scenic river, so the views are amazing. It’s where “Deliverance” was filmed.
