What to do about Lonzo Ball?

I just don’t see how he fits with this team anymore. I assume he will play SG instead of PG but his best ability to to facilitate for others. For a team that needs solid shooters surrounding Zion he just doesn’t seem like a good choice to play off the ball since his shooting is average at best. Maybe they let him bring the ball up instead of Bledsoe but I doubt it. Maybe they use Brandon Ingram in a point-forward role like LA uses LeBron.

My thought was he could facilitate as a point-forward and BI play the SG volume shooter role. But maybe I'm way off, just seems to fit given our roster

People made a decision on Lonzo as a player before last season, and regardless of his play have kept that opinion. Yes, he was bad in the bubble, but his overall play last season, including his shooting was solid. His defense wasn't great, but IMO that was more of a system issue than an individual issue.
If he doesn't work out in the offball guard role this season, we will move him at the deadline, IMO.

I'm hoping that Van Gundy's offense being a little more structured and a little less Gentry-stupid, Lonzo can cut down on some of the more ridiculous turnovers

I would agree, as well as if his defense doesn't improve.

I’m not the most technical basketball guy but I’ve always only known Lonzo as a good passing and good defending PG that just isn’t a very good scorer but maybe changing his shooting motion will change all that.

This times 1000. A lot of the frustrating stuff Lonzo did came from being up tempo and taking risks in Gentry's system.

It isn’t a coincidence that he has the highest turnover rate in that offense. He wasn’t known to be turnover prone prior to coming here.

We'll see how he does in the new system.
I just have a feeling he'll be just good enough that there's going to be at least one team that offers him a contract we simply should not match in RFA, and that alone has me thinking we should trade him before the deadline to get value for him instead of walking for nothing.
But we do have up to the deadline, and maybe he surprised and continues to get better, specifically at some of those things he struggled with last season. Turnovers, not driving to the hole, poor in the P&R.

Gentry's offense mostly consisted of, "Go out and play." His defense, "What's defense."
I love Gentry as a person and an assistant, but he is not head coach material. I saw that half way through year one. It's why I zoned out for the most part the last 5 years.

He’s gotta get his ft% up, especially for a guard. 57% last season, best in his 3 seasons.
That’s on him not the system.

As for Lonzo, we should give him a fair go and then reevaluate at the trade deadline. The only potential downside to holding off until then is if his play slips, but I think that's a slim chance under Gundy.
If he blows up, consider trading him to avoid needing to invest big in him going forward and get max return. If he plays as good or a little better than last year, maybe consider keeping him.
As for "where he fits", he will be one of the 2 guards on the floor. That's the long and short of it. Van Gundy already said he will use lineups with 2 and 3 ball handlers, as other teams have done.

The sample size in his career is so small. He barely averages 1 free throw a game over the course of his career. I think he just needs to get to the line more often so that we can get a definitive conclusion to his free throw shooting woes. For reference, Zion has almost as many free throws as Lonzo in 24 games compared to ball in 3 seasons.

Lonzo is great getting in the paint. But finishing...not so much.

Dude signed with Kutch, he’s gonna request top dollar and there’s gonna be a ton of bullshite in negotiations with Paul. If there isn’t a drastic change in his game I’d hope the Pels move him.
