To answer the OP:

I would have been very active in trying to move Ball this offseason for a competent SG or SF to some team that believes he is a true PG.

I don't believe in Lonzo and I don't believe he will be worth whatever his next contract is.

Hopefully he does amazing, but I don't see it. Would love to take my own L here.

cut down turnovers
work on driving and finishing at the rim

If he improves on those 2 things he is solid. He already showed he can be a good spot up 3 shooter

I totally agree, I just feel like we need to see him take another step this season. If he doesn’t then I think we need to move him.

We should trade him before his value drops

Like the last 2 years (outside of the overweight once in a generation Zion) that might take years to develop? Are we in the 5 or 10 year plan to compete?

Oh, you want draft picks that will be guaranteed all stars in year 1.

Nevermind, carry on

This is the $64 question as it relates to the Pels. I think they will know if he's a long term piece by the deadline.

He has a great connection with Zion. He wants to get Zion the ball any way he can. I'm all for him getting in an offense where you can facilitate more like Rondo.

I think this is a good point. I think SVG had it right in his analysis: PG in transition and SG in half-court offense. I’m not an expert in the motion offense, but I imagine it’s important that every player can pass and can do something off ball. Lonzo can create offense from all over the court and is becoming a decent spot up shooter. I think he can be successful on this team just doing that.

NBA execs and GMs: Lonzo is a good player that can play and defend multiple positions, which is valuable

He was really bad on defense for the Pels. To be fair to Lonzo he was HORRIBLE to start the season and improved steadily to passable by the end. I do believe spending the summer rehabbing instead of training really dragged him down because based on his reputation I was expecting someone at least as good as Josh Hart on defense but we never saw that.

I'm hoping an offseason of training instead of rehabbing will give the Pels a defender that lives up to Lonzo's reputation. If he does that and adds a floater then maybe it will be worth paying him close to $20 per year.

I just assumed Bledsoe would be the 2 even though he’s small...Lonzo as an off-ball player seems pretty worthless to me.

I wonder what we could realistically expect to get for Lonzo in trade?

I’d do everything in my power to move on from him.

Van Gundy is coming in with fresh eyes, he’s like a newborn babe in the manger. A fresh blade of grass in spring after a night of wet dew. Or a brand new Kia Rio from 2015. I have faith he will get the hierarchy right.

It's really the opposite.

He really doesn't give us much of anything as the on ball facilitator in the half court.

He's awful in pick and roll and never drives to the rim, he basically doesn't create at all.

Yes I'm being a d-bag??. Honest opinion is that Lonzo is solid and will get better so we should keep him. You very rarely get equal value in trades. We just need to accept that he won't be able to finish at the rim or get to the foul line. He does just about everything else well.

I think he will get better at def now that we have an adequate coaching staff. Remember, his nba coaches have been Luke Walton and Gentry, both don't even try to coach defense.

And if, which will very possibly happen, if a team offers him a contract well above his value in restricted free agency?

Getting something for him is better than 1 year and overpaying him or letting him walk.

Lonzo being a worthy rotation player or even starter isn't the question, it's can the Pels afford to pay a premium for a 3 & D guard who probably gets at least a $5-$10 million overpay because of name recognition and draft status.

It doesn't sound like a huge overpay but every thing adds up. There were many reasons they traded Jrue, but balancing the books long term was no doubt a big component. If Lonzo is going to be throwing lobs to Zion for the next 10 years, he can't be overpaid, which either means he needs to get paid less than most expect or he needs to improve enough to live up to $20 million a year. Being just a 3 and D guard isn't good enough, we could get more or less the same production from Josh Hart for $12 million.
