Any old timers around and remember the Kennedy assassination?

What was your experience and memory of it? Were conspiracy theories popping up right away?

It happened the same month Ole Miss won their last SEC Championship in football. Think about that.

I was in 7th grade. We were in the cafeteria when we heard. The entire school went into church to pray. I watched Oswald get shot on Sunday afternoon and the entire funeral on Monday.

I vaguely remember the funeral only.

My mom and I were talking about this yesterday - she was a sophomore in high school when JFK was shot.
She grew up in New Orleans - and no one in her family liked JFK (even though he was Irish Catholic like us) - she said the first thought that it was communists or Castro that assassinated him - but when Ruby killed Oswald - even more conspiracy theories came out
Later on with the Garrison stuff - there were places that he used to frequent that my family also had connections with - so my family always believed him

I was in the 7th grade at Glasgow during recess. I didn't believe the guy that told me about it at first. Had some kids cheer. There were some really pissed off teachers. I remember crying that night. Very upsetting times.

Did you get off from school?

My mother cried and my father was pissed because he hated LBJ more than he hated JFK.
Friends father was an asst DA in Jim Garrisons office that tried Clay Shaw.

I think conspiracy theories, at least their prevalence, are a recent phenomenon. The 1960s had a whole lot of upheaval but I don’t remember any conjectures beyond what was reported in the news media.

Why were these 7th graders cheering?

My dad was in HS at the time and told me that he'll never forget his teacher walking into the class with her face white as a sheet and told them that the president had been killed.
I've been to the book depository and honestly a lot of civilians could make that shot. Granted, moving target etc but I thought it would be further.

7 years old. Remember but far too young to think in terms of conspiracy

Kennedy wasn't liked by a lot of Southerners. My dad says many folks in this part of South Carolina thought LBJ would be a better President because he was a Texan and not a Yankee.
