If you haven't done it already, watch Ken Burns "Civil War" series that was aired on PBS many years ago. If I'm not mistaken, it is something like 10 hours of viewing.

Great series that covers the Civil War extensively with interviews with scholars on the subject, recitations of letters and passages from journals of the soldiers and tons of great photos.

Shelby Foote, one of the foremost scholars on the Civil War does a hell of a job with his presentations during the show.

This isn't really that great a movie, but it is notable for at least two things: the later GWTW took not a little from it, and there is one extraordinary scene (which would never be done today) in which the Scarlett-like heroine walks into a barn full of rebellious ex-slaves and talks them down (even slapping one of the men)

So we're gonna list movies that happen to take place during the Civil War?

Good/Bad/Ugly

Love Me Tender -- although technically the War is over when the film begins (that will be very significant re the plot)

Not great, but check out Field of Lost Shoes (2014). It is the story of the VMI cadets that fought at the Battle of New Market.

Major Dundee is as good as it gets.

Charlton Heston, Richard Harris, and a young Jim Hutton.

Directed by Peckinpah. That’s really all you need to know.

Loved the Stooges as a kid and still will watch some of their shorts from time to time.

As a matter of fact, every Saturday from about 5 till 7 p.m. they show shorts on ME TV right before that sci-fi show "Svengolie" comes on.

There's a litte movie called Gone With The Wind out there to view. Its basically a drama about a spoiled little bitch, but it's a must watch if you've never seen it.

Btw, the Horse Soldiers is awesome and extremely underrated. Wayne and Holden going head to head on screen is unreal.

As a kid I really enjoyed Fess Parker in The Great Locomotive Chase about Union troops stealing a Confederate train. Haven't seen it since then so no clue how it holds up. I just remember really liking it as a ten year old.
