Downsize the NBA

With all this talk of Harden trying to go to Brooklyn to form the latest super team, it's time to accept that there's not enough elite talent to fill out a 30 team league. There's about 20-30 legit elite players and probably about 10 superstars and they all want to play on the same team.
The result is a bad basketball experience for the majority of fan bases across the country. Unlike the NFL where a team can come out of nowhere from the 6 seed wildcard to win the Super Bowl, the seven game playoff format means Goliath almost always wins. In fact, just five teams account for 51 of the NBA's 74 championships. If you're a fan of the Hornets or Pelicans or Pacers, you know going into this season (and every season for the next ten years) that your teams isn't going to win.
End the charade. Put out a 16-20 team NBA and load each team with multiple superstars/elite talent.

As far as I am concerned, they can downsize to 0 (zero).

Not to mention all these small market teams with barely any corporate support let alone local die hard fans that show up consistently

Agree about the problem but disagree on the solution. I think bigger incentives need to be given to players for staying with the franchise that drafted them. Not sure what that could look like at the moment.

Downsizing? Que Dwight Schrute

You have been able to pick the 2-4 teams that have any shot of winning before the season even starts for the last forever many years.
The regular season is just a sick joke at this point.

You want a less accurate way to decide the best team in the league?

I agree that the NBA seems like the one sport where certain teams will literally never do anything.
Lived in Atlanta for 7 years and followed the Hawks - even in their best season they got swept by Lebron in the ECF.
Now have lived in MSP for 7 years, TWolves have had multiple #1 picks (not to mention several former #1 picks on the roster) and still won't do jack shite. Even when they had Wiggins, KAT, and Butler it was a g-sweep by Houston

Downsize the NBA
But if your issues is super teams, what you should be arguing for is the following:
- Hard Cap
- No Max salaries
- No draft
Then you get as much parity as you possibly can.

Eliminate the franchise with the worst record every year for the next ten years.

Well that didn't take long.

I think they should get rid of the draft, expand to 40 teams, and have an upper/lower division with promotion and relegation.

So that's 40 players... 4 teams.
2 in the east, 2 in the west.
2 7 game series, 1 7 game series final and you are done.
NBA season in 3 weeks.

I bet no one expected the heat to make the finals at the beginning of the season

A hard cap or doing away with fully guaranteed contracts would help but the players will never go for it.
Giving them more money to stay isn’t the answer because we’ve seen players turn down the super max(AD) and larger extensions(Harden).
Hell Kawhi left a championship team to go home and team up with PG. This current group of stars just love teaming. Hope the next generation isn’t like that.

If the players want to give up millions of dollars to improve their place of living, idk why people are so hell bent on stopping them

I disagree. I think it helps the NBA to create more lore around super stars if there’s a wide disparity between them and the bottom half of players.
The NBA is about stars more than it’s about teams. People from all over the country wear the jerseys of NBA stars, especially when they are winning.

Everyone complains about super teams, but super teams drive ratings.

Those skyrocketing TV ratings sure support your point.
