Weekend house within an hour so of NOLA

I figured I may get better responses here than the OT. I'm not looking for hunting property but I am looking for a place to build a small weekend place (cabin) on land that is enjoyable to get away to for the weekend. I think within an hour drive or so would be ideal.
Using this is as a hurricane excavation point is an added bonus. So relative safety from storms is important.
Any suggestions of where to look?

Some friends recently purchased a cabin in Percy Quinn (McComb, MS) and love it. It is about 1.5 hours North of NOLA on I-55, and has other infrastructure in place so you don't have to pay to have utilities (power, internet, etc.) brought to the undeveloped land.
Also, per the website, "...you will have access to golf, fishing, community pool, nature trails, tennis courts, etc..."
You can also rent cabins there to make sure you enjoy it before committing.

It's tough to be safe from hurricanes and still an hour from NOLA. Anywhere you go you're still going to be exposed to strong winds and potential power outages, but if you're just looking to avoid potential flooding then you'll have some options.
I would look up I-59 south of Hattiesburg.

Your hour range is less than ideal. You won't have great hunting and you won't be out of hurricane threat areas.

Lots of NOLA people have getaways and/or hunting property in Poplarville, MS. We didn't lose power at the camp there with the past storm. Flooding isn't an issue, just the wind.

Friend of mine retired there and bought 8 acres and built his house and put a small pond on the land. His main concern with his home site was the amount of tall pine trees.
He had the ones near where the house was going to be built cut down and has not had an issue with any house damage during storms.

Within an hour, Poplarville area has a lot going for it with your criteria.

As said, one hour is going to be hard to do probably. There is a lot of secluded land/would be hunting and outdoor activity areas out off of Hwy 190 and it's a straight shot to BR then to 190 from Nola. Probably some backroads for evacuation routes as well. Also, further than an hour, but up around the Natchez/CenLa area there is a lot of rural land as well. Natchez especially has some nice hills and what not.

Might want to stretch the travel out to 2-3 hours.

Maybe just my nature, but I'd be looking for something on a river or a lake.
A boat gives you entertainment options like fishing or a relaxing booze cruise, or at least something different than another car ride. Hunting? Maybe so if that's what you're looking for.
And maybe a nicer view than whatever you're used to in Nola. Plenty in different price ranges on different rivers as people's interests wax and wane.
Good luck. Sounds like a nice mission.

Depending on traffic a place on the Bogue Chitto in Washington Parish would be nice, something in the Enon/Sun area. It might be a little longer than a hours drive but it would probably be worth it.
