AR15 Handguard compatibility

I'm potentially building an AR15 upper or just buying a pre assembled one. What do I need to know about handguard compatibility? Do only certain types or sizes work with certain upper receivers? Or do you just use adapters? New to this so not really knowledgeable at all on how they come together.

Most will have their own proprietary barrel nut. Just torque it on and install.

So I need to make sure whatever I get has a barrel nut? That's the piece that connects the handguard to the UR?

and the barrel. Yes.
I have several midwest industries that I really like a lot if you want any names.

Keep in mind you'll need a few extra purchases if you want to assemble your own upper. Torque wrench if you don't already have one, AR vice block, probably an armorer's wrench.

You also need to buy a gas block that will fit under whatever handguard you buy. If you go with an fsb, make sure the handguard is the right length.

If this is your first rodeo, you don't want to buy all the proper tools (way more than what has been listed) or you are not going to do a bunch just buy something complete from a reputable company.
SOLGW and LMT are my go to for defense rifles right now, Larue UU for precision oriented rifle. Larue will assemble their UU kits for free.

Some Handguards (Aeroprecision) won’t work with billet style upper receivers

I know what it is, I just don’t know why anybody would use one a build.

Being that an AR vise block set, torque wrench, and armorer’s wrench has already been mentioned, what else would you recommend other than some roll pin punches?
ETA: and some go, no-go gauges

Yeah, I just mentioned the specialty stuff. If they don’t have vice grips, punches and other common tools I don’t think I’d recommend someone do a build.

Are these really necessary? I have a few ARs that work fine. By using those BCGs to compare in a new build using a spent casing, would that work in a pinch?

Not if you buy from a reputable manufacturer.

Because sometimes people get bored.
And build something unique.
