Apparently, I would fall in this category (having been born between 1993 and 1998).

Some notable points:
quote:

For instance, zillennials don’t remember always having internet throughout their youth as Gen Z did. But, equally, zillennials don’t always remember VHS tapes from the 90s either as millennials do.

When I used the internet, it was always broadband (though my family was an early adapter of broadband; I believe we upgraded from dial-up around 2001). VHS was also a big deal during my early childhood, but DVD quickly took over by the end of 2001.

quote:

The term Zillennial depicts the generation that grew and had their teens “during the transition from non-digital to digital-first.”

I remember during my middle school and early high school years, smartphones existed but were few and far between compared to by the time I entered college.

The article can be found here.

We had VHS until at least like 5th grade. Same with dial up. I was 10 years old when we got high speed WiFi.

Only zillennials would create their own mini generational category.

It is pretty amazing to me how we have all this tech today, yet somehow I got a degree in IT 20 years ago. Thanks young people

Generations always blur together. Different sources never agree about exactly what dates are cutoff between them. We always put too much stock in the idea.

yeah a few years ago I remember they were talking about Xillenials. Who were supposed to be the people born in the early 80s, meaning they were in college before social media really started to take off.

The generational stuff is ok in general but some people take it really seriously- thinking boomers need to die to save the world and stuff like that, and that's really dumb.

I don’t think we had actual wireless internet until I was in high school and I think we’re close in age. I’m pretty sure the justification was that no one had devices that could actually use it. I don’t think I got an Iphone until I was a junior or senior in high school

eta-I lied. first iPhone was when I got to LSU in 2010

My kid was born 8 years later and used VHS tapes sometimes when she was little.

I guess some don't want to be associated with millennials or Zoomers, and I can't blame them.

i remember the internet existing throughout my entire childhood while also remembering VHS tapes

i dont even know what this really means. there was a sizeable portion of my life where video cameras were big clunky things that you had physical tapes for, where polaroid cameras and the ones where you had 25 preloaded films existed, and the world where camera phones were the biggest thing. i geuss thats what that means

Interesting. I would fall into this category as well, being born in 1996. I've never heard of the term "Zillennial" before, but I've always thought some distinct term would be useful to coin those of us born in the mid to late 90s that aren't true Millennials or Zoomers.

I'm just barely old enough to remember 9/11, but I have no real memory of pre-9/11 America. People around our age grew up in the 2000s and can remember what the world was like before widespread social media and smartphones. Social media was starting to take off when we were in middle school and high school. I didn't have WiFi in the house or a smartphone until my freshman year of college. Most kids my age had those things a bit before me, but not by much. I watched plenty of VHS tapes as a young kid, before we upgraded to a DVD player.

People our age didn't really grow up in the 90s and have no memory of things like the Y2K panic that defined that decade. I think that disqualifies us from truly being "Millennials". My brother is 10 years older than me, squarely in the middle of Generation Y, and he had a very different childhood.

On the flipside, the kids in high school right now (and younger) are growing up in a different society than we did. The majority of them have never known life without widespread WiFi, smartphones, and social media. They're exposed to technology 24/7. A lot of them are extremely well-versed in technology, but struggle with socializing and formal interpersonal relationships. They also have to be super careful about what parts of their lives are documented on social media. It could be anecdotal, but they seem to be much less into sports than people our age.

The lines between generations are always blurry, but in the future, I think the generational spans will get shorter and shorter with the continued rapid advancement and integration of technology into society.

I was born in 91 and despite all these attempts I still think they’ve failed to label “my generation”
