I have never slept well. I probably average 5 hours a night at best. Been that way for 25 years. Its not the booze for me though I do partake.

My mind wonders and I think about shite I have to do way too much.

Not sure it will ever change for me

We all need to learn to cope in a productive way, and without substances/things that can negatively affect our lives and relationships. To say it’s a slippery slope is an understatement. There is a great analogy about a carnivorous flower that attracts bees with its nectar, as the bee lands it gets stuck, and doesn’t realize it till when it tries to leave. At what point is this bee in trouble? When it tries to flee, or when it lands?

I’m the opposite. Drinking and evening sugar intake frick mine up.

Note that one glass of wine stimulates serotonin, but beyond that sleep is negatively impacted.

Working out/running is the best way for me to ensure I sleep. Have to tire your body out enough during the day.

Alcohol is proven to interrupt your sleep cycles. Stop drinking before bed and read a book to fall asleep

You’re an alcoholic and you don’t exercise to make you tired.

It appears to me like you aren’t handling stress from work well. Find a way to deal with it. Exercise is my first recommendation. The next recommendation, and pretty much just as important as the first, is to adjust your diet. Eating better will make you feel better and will alleviate stress. I’m making these suggestions assuming that you already don’t do those things, but drinking before bed us not good and indicative of unhealthy habits.

Y’all could be right. I’m dealing with getting married this Saturday, Honeymoon for a week in aspen, work, remodeling a new house, moving and selling the old house. My plate is pretty full and stress is a plenty right now.

Beyond the “mini-awakenings,” the second downside of alcohol is its impact on REM sleep, and, more specifically, its downstream effects on cognitive function, learning, and mental health. Walker lets us know that alcohol is one of the most powerful suppressors of REM sleep that scientists know of. According to Walker, “People even consuming moderate amounts of alcohol in the afternoon and evening are depriving themselves of dream s

I read that book. Great book that also talks about sleep hygiene’, getting yourself ready to sleep. About an hour before bed, I turn off all the light in my house except a few lamps. I limit my phone use. I don’t drink at all but that’s not because of sleep, it’s because I’m an alcoholic. I wake up often, very often but fall back to sleep easily even if I get up for a snack.

I dream like a son of bitch though. Last night, I dreamed I was escaping the family farm (we’ve never farmed or anything close to it) on a train and the authorities were looking for me. I decided on a spot that was likely not not have alligators and jumped off to pee while I waited for the next train but it came from the wrong direction. I seemed to suspect that my sister was gonna be on the next train coming from the right direction and that was a bad thing. In real life, I love my sister but in the dream, I thought she was gonna turn me in.

Alcohol actually interrupts your sleep pattern significantly more than being sober. It's very hard to ever get REM sleep. You should try not drinking and sleeping

When I was drinking, I blamed a lot of it on not being able to sleep. Looking back, it was way more than that. I would drink to pass out almost every night but wake up at 2:00. Then either toss and turn or drink more. If I tossed and turned, I started every day overly anxious and exhausted. It was a maddening cycle.

There is a root to your problem and ‘drinking to sleep’ ain’t it. That will not help you in any way. Learn to turn work off. If you’re working from home, separate yourself from work and from home life. I go for a walk, a long walk walk after stressful days and that helps me tremendously. When I return from my walk, I’m not at work anymore. It took that for me to separate the two. Go for a drive, go to Home Depot, throw a ball with your kids, if you have them. Call a girl, they’ll talk your head off. Do something before this gets worse, then you really won’t be able to sleep. Problems compound with alcohol.

Thanks for all the warnings.

I honestly thought it was just stress from everything going on in my life right now. I have never had problems staying asleep before the last month or 2.
