They are using tax resources and not paying taxes in the district

The article says he owns a house and pays resident taxes to the school district. If it’s 100% remote learning who cares where he is physically if he is paying for it?

Not really. Just go to school where you live or do some virtual school that lets you live wherever if you don’t like your district school.

this stuff is so stupid. Either the schools are safe or they are not safe.

Many school buildings do not have the space to have the entire school present on the same day. The hybrid schedule has the school building open everyday but only 75% of the students can attend at the same time.

School choice is dumb because it fills the best schools with mediocre kids

As long as he still owns a house in the district and its fully online, then I don't see the issue.

The only issue I can see you running into in that scenario is if the kids start slacking and because they're in another state there's no way to do a home visit to verify the well-being of the kids.

I’m sorry but they don’t live there anymore. You don’t rent your house out when you’ll be back soon.

Ummm if it’s a situation that actually requires home visit he can be visited in MO. Though I’m not sure slacking really warrants that either way.

Think about the inverse as well. He isn't paying taxes in MO (particularly any related to schools), but the other school thinks MO citizens should pay for his kids.

That's all it really comes down to. Students are viewed as dollar signs.

He's worried about the pandemic but letting stranger after stranger come in and covid up his house?

Sounds more like he's freeloading off his aunt and enjoying nicer weather while getting extra income from his house.

None of that is the school districts business

"what is being hurt by this kid logging on from Missouri"

Generally the State pays the district per child enrolled, so the kids actual district is "losing" money because the school he's going to is getting the money. This happened in Bogalusa when the Superintendent of Bogalusa schools complained to the State that kids in the Bogalusa district were going to schools in northern St. Tammany parish. Poor kids got kicked out of school, and they all went to school Franklinton or private. Bogalusa schools got zero dollars anyway, they just ruined a bunch of families lives.

People who live in desirable areas list their house on Air BnB when they go out of town all of the time.

My buddy lives in downtown Austin and will rent his house out while he’s on a weekend getaway or during ACL Fest and then he stays with a friend.

If he's renting it out, he's not really the one paying the taxes.

A lot of places won't accept kids if they are out of district. Not sure why this is even a story.

You can't even use the dump where I live without showing county residence.

The dad is in Missouri, but its temporary. He has a house in this school district, I imagine that is where he is registered to vote. So he is a resident of the area his kids go to school.

If they are doing remote learning. Why does it matter where the kids are doing it from?

Air BNB is not renting it out in any real, permanent sense. Air BNB is by the night, nothing long term.

If I were the bureaucrat who had to make the call here, I'd look at how frequently the house has been booked on AirBnB, but I'd also look at simple availability. I mean, if I can go on AirBnB and book this place for some weekend 6 months from now, then that's a pretty solid indication it's not these people's permanent residence.

I'd also suggest that this whole situation is just evidence of what a drain local governments are on all of us. Originally the states, counties, cities, etc. had some measure of autonomy when it came to making the law reflect local values. That's been eroded over the years, by the Civil War, by the federal funding of highways and schools, and by who knows what else. Local and state government in 2020 has turned into a mechanism for picking our pockets and perpetuating poverty.

So in that general sense my sympathies are with this family.

Dude is an idiot.

Easy solution, "yeah, I'm back."

The end.
