Trial of the Chicago 7 (Netflix) - 93% RT Score

I really enjoyed this movie. The ending was a bit eye-rolling, but it has some really good performances in it. Mark Rylance and Frank Langella were great as the defense attorney and the judge.

I definitely had some issues, including the eye-roll ending. Loved the first 15 minutes unabashedly. Thought Sorkin's use of archival footage was... silly, at best. Continues Sorkin's aversion to moral ambiguity and subtlety, when I think those two things would make this story much more compelling. Langella works as the devil, but he is playing a literalized version of the devil. Fine.

I think it's worth a watch for all, even if you get pissed at it.
There was a better way to tell the story without being heavyhanded.

Well everyone had their cases overturned on appeal because of the Judges antics, so I’m assuming they were that far off. Many of their lines were apparently quotes.

Make no mistake it is fictionalized but the general demeanor is fairly accurate. I was sad that they didn't show Hoffman doing a handstand on the defense table.
I read the transcripts 30 years ago so I don't remember ever nuance but Seale got the worst treatment by the judge and Judge Hoffman was unquestionably biased. Kunstler was far more dramatic during the trial and it probably makes the judge seem even more biased than he was in the movie.

Yeah apparently Bobby Seale was actually gagged and chained in the real trial. And he actually was denied legal representation.

I suspect the judge was that bad. But did it hold true to actual court records? Or were they sensationalizing for sake of story? I’d have to imagine everything is in the court record.

The judge was at least as bad as portrayed and it was clear in the record he was extremely biased. Now don't get me wrong Kunstler was a handful for any judge and the film portrayed him as MUCH more reserved than he was known to be in court and certainly in this case. He and Judge Hoffman argued a lot more than shown and it was clearly personal with Kunstler starting a dick measuring contest on their professional CVs. Kunstler almost certainly deserved a couple of nights in county for his contempt but the 4 years the judge sentenced him too was unprecedented and ridiculous and was overturned. Whether you agree with his politics or not there are two things about William Kunstler he was good at his job* and he had principles in that he was not a hired gun but only repped those with whom he shared ideals.
I know a lot of people still hate the hippie movement but IMO they were on the right side of history vis a vis the Vietnam war, music, and probably pot but not so much with the rest of their ideals.
* he was much better than the movie showed but it wasn't about him. He figured out a couple of things decades before many other attorneys did, one press is a powerful weapon and two juries like some theatrics with their trials. While some may bristle at the comparison he brought to the courtroom what Trump has brought to politics.

Thought it was really good, but Sasha’s American accent is distracting. The judge and JGL were great.
In real life after they gagged and bound Seale the prosecutor immediately asked for a mistrial but the judge didn’t grant it for 4 days.... a man was sitting without legal representation tied and gagged for 4 days in court... how was he not removed from the bench?

Very entertaining movie. You could tell it had Sorkin’s fingerprints all over it. I love movies about court cases, and I know that court case movies aren’t specifically a genre, but it’s one of my favorite types of sub genre. Also for just about that entire movie, I thought that Sacha Baron Cohen was Rob Riggle
