How hard is it to get one and what do you do on the job?
Posted on 10/1/20 at 1:08 pm to Tigahhs97

Can you manage?

Get coffee, run errands, take the blame for your supervisor when he fricks up.

If my friend can get one....anyone can

Depends on where you live and who you know.
You might get asked to do things like VIF dimensions, keep the plans up to date (post RFI/ASI to the plans), document punch list items.

Where do you live?
I’ll read through your post history real quick and I may be able to help depending on what kind of person you hold yourself out to be.
Are you doing the LSU Construction Interview day in a few weeks? We have 50ish LSU applicants.

You do all the bitch work that everyone hates doing
Make copies, run scans, do material takeoffs, document check-in, etc. All the tedious stuff

Attend networking events and it shouldn't be that difficult to find one. Who knows what you'll be doing. Some CM interns get stuck filing papers, but if you're persistent you might end up with a worthwhile task. Probably shadowing someone in estimating or controls. Plus whatever bitch work comes along like "Hey go get my oil changed".

If you are at LSU, the department does a Construction Interview Day every semester. I got all my internships and my first job from the interview day.
Other places to look it on company websites. I recently began working for another company and while I was filling out applications I saw a few of the larger companies across the country had internship employment opportunities.

Real question is, who are you related to?

go to local contractors:
General Contractors
Mechanical Contractors
Electrical contractors
ect.
if you want Industrial then hit up industrial contractors, if you want commercial hit up commercial contractors

if you're at LSU, make sure you join CSA. I'm a CIAC member and am always at events talking to kids. that's where we basically decide who we're going to give a shot on CID

If my dumb arse got one back in the day, anyone can get one.

Nothing too strenuous or complicating. Look at plans/specs and just watching over the laborers like a big money baw.

Your the PM/Supers #2. You will get blamed for stuff that’s not your fault.
Who will be your number 2 for you to blame?

You get out of it what you put into it.
Some of my buddies made material runs and got lunch all summer. I told my superintendent I wanted to learn to read plans, so every afternoon we went into the field with a set of prints and he made me learn to walk myself through the structure. By far one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had professionally and gave me a huge leg up my last year of school and on to my career.

I am in pipeline construction and my previous employer recruited hard for interns. We had engineering at our company too so the interns spent a couple of weeks in the corporate office seeing day to day office bullshite, a couple of weeks in engineering seeing what those geeks do, and then out in the field with operations seeing what really pays the bills. I usually put them with our PE’s in the field who are basically grunts for the PM’s. If the PM had the PE doing all his heavy lifting than the intern might get some tasks thrown at him but mostly they sat in a corner and took notes and went out to the field some with Foremans.

CID at LSU, or know Someone.
Get one sooner than later. I interned at two large companies and it was great for the resume
