It would seem on paper that this was not the group to play man coverage with. That is exactly what LSU did, though, and it cost them dearly

quote:

Out West, the Washington Huskies had great success running any type of zone coverage against Leach’s attack. Over the past two seasons, the Huskies ran Cover 1 or Cover 2 man only eight times on 114 pass plays. They also rushed three or fewer players 77% of the time. They chose to sit back and allow Gardner Minshew and Anthony Gordon to make mistakes. In two games, those quarterbacks combined for only 459 yards, 0 touchdowns, four interceptions and five sacks. Meanwhile, LSU allowed over 600 yards in one game.

I know who was missing out there Saturday, but my goodness.

I hated playing zone as a young db but a little could’ve gone a long way especially against that scheme and how Leach calls it.

My guess is this wasn't only on Bo...

Ed hated Aranda's Zone and wanted something more aggressive. I'm betting he didn't want to switch to Zone because of this. He wanted to prove his approach has validity.

LSU has too much confidence in their DBs. The group I saw on Saturday were slow, out of place, and didn't know how to tackle.

Let’s start with the roster. LSU was already going to be without safety Grant Delpit and cornerback Kristian Fulton, who were each drafted in the early rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Tigers then lost nickel back Kary Vincent Jr. to an opt-out before the season started and all-world cornerback Derek Stingley to illness the day before the game. That’s 3528 snaps not playing from last year's national championship secondary.

There is a possibility that Bo had no trust in our very young inexperienced secondary to play Zone when were primarily a Man team.

I suspect w Stingley the game plan would’ve faired much better. Very hard to switch to something you prob don’t practice much. But the lack of quality depth at that position was exposed. Bo smart enough to know now he has to hide a few of our guys with some zone. Interesting to see if he earns that paycheck and reaches those kids mentally to improve across the board.

Without being too shitty towards specific players,

Some of our DBs, I won't name names, looked like they were LEGIT scared of contact. I mean I almost roasted a couple for legit not even trying to tackle MSU's big WRs. This reminded me of Texas AM when the first joined the SEC. The fact that this specific kid got playing time for LSU is an absolute disgrace. Sad thing is he's been here for 3-4 years now.

Myles B. looked like he had the yips, couldn't stand in the pocket or dump off to wide open receivers after 3 seconds.

Hope that he took a long look in the mirror after that performance. It's like the defense is going to get the big turnover or get burned for a quick 6.

This article is gold.

There is nearly 25 years of info on Leach’s offense. It the same plays over and over. Not being prepared with adjustments is the coaches fault.

He didn't have to go zone every play. Just throw it in there every once in a while and keep Costello on his toes. Hell, you don't even have to go zone across the board. Just drop a backer in the middle of the field every once in a while to take the crossing route away.

We did none of that. Costello knew every time he stepped to the line he was getting man coverage across the board. With that scheme and a QB that knows how to run it, he knew exactly where to go every single play.

Bo's hubris that our strength is better than your strength is what cost us. Very Miles-esque.

It was clear to me that the man to man scheme was not working yet we stayed with it.

An high level pass defense requires the ability to play man and zone and be able to disguise the 2.

We just went man all day and got lit up.

Missing one player should not have cost us that much ground.

It’s concerning

Aranda would have played it like the Huskies..or pretty close to that.

The only reason I can think of was he wanted to try and pull of the win and stick in man D the whole way thru. I appreciate it to a certain extent but, if your getting whipped, its time to make a change. We should have played a mix of zone and man. What bothers me most about Pellini is he didn't seem to know it was time to make a change in time to win the game. We had scored points to win. This one was on the D.

pretty concerning no adjustments made.

i think we will be better with Stingley, but would be nice to have a DC try to make adjustments.

maybe he did, but it didn't seem like it.

The bottom line is that you have to be multiple in order to win consistently. Any single scheme can be defended. Unfortunately we weren't multiple on defense Saturday. Whether that was due to lack of talent because of player losses, lack of practice time due to COVID and everything else this off season, or lack of coaching scheme/ability, Bo needs to be able to use multiple or or other teams will use Leach's blueprint to beat us.

like zone is easy to install with greenhorns.........especially with limited practice

ask aranda or chavis how tough it is.

A good way to slow down some of those fricking crossing routes would be to get some hitters picking those guys up in zone coverage.

It's an extremely effective route for YAC, but it does put the receivers in a position to get blasted at times.

No doubt the blueprint was there on how to stop the Leach offense and how to adjust to its wrinkles. Bo didn't do his homework, I trust that won't happen again.
