Its just a saying. Someone says "What's going on man?" And that person replies "You know.. Just fighting the good fight.. just fighting the good fight". Its just something to say.. And you can take it however you want. What you might consider "the good fight" might be different than what someone else considered "the good fight".

I always took it to mean struggling to live a virtuous life, as exampled in the life of Jesus, who was fully human and fully God and entirely free and free of sin, in a fallen world where temptation is constantly knocking at your door.

The Iona College Motto is "Certa Bonum Certamen", Latin for "Fight the Good Fight."
I always thought that it meant that I should do my best everyday; take care of the weaker or less fortunate; and live a life that honors my God, my country, my family, and myself. I often considered it in a somewhat romantic way as in a stanza of "The Impossible Dream" from "Man of Lamancha":
To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march into hell
For a heavenly cause!
In today's parlance I suppose it would mean - I should do my best to help another human being; love God; and try not to be a dick.
