Charles Lightoller
2nd officer on Titanic went down with the ship but a subsurface boiler explosion pushed him back up to the surface right next to a lifeboat. Unconfirmed report states he refused John Jacob Aster from getting onto a lifeboat because they were “women and Children only”
He was cleared of any wrongdoing on Titanic and was actually promoted for bravery.
He then serves in WWI engaging a zeppelin, German Destroyers, and also sinks a U-boat
When WWII breaks out, a retired Lightoller uses his personal yacht to evacuate 120 soldiers from Dunkirk and serves as a civilian volunteer throughout the war.
Thats one hell of a story to tell your grandchildren

Using the power of Wikipedia and basic arithmetic, he did this at the young age of 66. Heck of a man.

I remember him from when I read A Night to Remember in 6th grade.
I always thought he had a badass name. I'm glad to finally have his badassery confirmed.

So he refused to rescue men from the Titanic but would go out of his way to rescue men from Dunkirk
He’s not a hero...he’s a hypocrite.

You sound like a fun person to hang out with.

Huh?
Two totally different situations.

Congratulations on writing probably the dumbest thing I'll read this week. And it's only Tuesday. Well done.

He also suffered personal loss during WWII. He lost two sons in the conflict (one at the very beginning of the war and another at the very end of the war). Also, fun bit of trivia, Mark Rylance's character in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk was based heavily on Lightoller.
