Respectfully, I might have a bit more insight into the weather and people than you.

I’m currently enjoying sitting at the beach, going to have a lobster roll for lunch, and then headed home. I can think of worse places to live.

But to each their own.

I’ll see your three years and raise you seven. Though I’m sure your aunt and sisters may know more than me.

I’m not saying there is never bad weather here. Spring sucks. And winter gets old after a month or so. But 9 months? Come on.

Any of you ever live, for any amount of time, in New York City? If so, what was your experience there? Was it better or worse than you expected before you moved there? What are the pros and cons of living there? And also, are the rats as bad as they say?

Others have mentioned it but if you're single and 25-35 the city is an amazing place to be. The cost of living makes raising a family there very challenging though. I don't know anyone who stayed to raise kids there, they just couldn't afford it. These were people who made good money too, and even they couldn't make it work (Brooklyn and Manhattan specifically).

This is also really corny but it's cute around Christmas with all the lights, the Rockefeller center display and all that. There's a great atmosphere to it.

get out more

I’ve been up there over a dozen times, at all times of year, and I just did a month on cape cod. Nice place to visit a few months per year. Boston is a great city and I know many people out there, but I’ve never known anyone that actually lived there and raved about the climate or the people.

My God-daughter got a job at Goldman Sachs right out of college, making around $65k/yr.

How long ago was this?
Unless she was in a back office/ops role because first year analysts in the front office are making 90-95

Yea this isn’t Minneapolis
It’s probably what 5-6 degrees on average colder than NYC?
It’s “blistering” cold here December- Feb
By March it’s in the 40s (which I don’t find that cold anymore)

I wouldn’t even bother taking a job in NYC for 90-95k unless you’re some trust fund type.

Two-three years ago. Forensic accounting, maybe? She had done an internship there then worked there for a year after graduating. She's not a fan of the cold and that happened to be one of the snowiest and coldest winters in a long time so she moved back after her first year.

The same cost of living for me to live in NYC for what I make in Lake Charles is $362,614.00. I would seriously doubt I’d ever get paid that in NYC.

This is what leads to clear divisions in these type cities of haves and have nots. There is no middle class.

Boston would be a terrible place to live. The weather is absolutely trash 9 months per year and the people are just awful.

Boston is a pretty awesome place to live. There’s a ton of stuff to do in the city and a lot of outdoor activities within a short drive

If you’re a 21-22 year old that just got an IB or trading analyst position out of college with Goldman Sachs you suck it up for the year that will be your salary

Lived in Brooklyn for 3 years 2014-2017. It was fantastic and I would move back in a second. The biggest single issue was just the cost of buying a home. I couldn't see me buying anything in the price range that I could afford.

ETA Also the prices you all are throwing out are completely absurd you can live absolutely fine in NYC making $75K/year. You are going to share a rental with 3-4 other people but you will be absolutely fine.

This is what my cousin said. "You can get NY style pizza anywhere! But this place is unique to NYC!"

Sorry but a pizza that is the size of a frisbee for $30 is unjustifiable. I don't care if its NYC.

And the sad part is my cousin was acting like paying $30 for such a thing was an amazing privilege. "Part and parcel of living in NYC!!" As if she loves paying out the arse for things that would be half the cost in most other places in this country. She then wanted to take us to some cookie place which I am sure was selling single chocolate chip cookies for $10 a pop but the rain kept us away.

this is absolute nonsense. You can buy a $30 frisbee pizza in every city in the country. Sounds like your cousin has absolutely no idea where to find good pizza in the city. Roberta's is the inventor of hipster pizza and they charge $21/pizza at the most.

This notion that it costs $3k to rent a closet in NYC is ridiculous.

I have two employees in their late 20’s that live in Brooklyn. One makes $80k, the other $65k, and they both love NY and get by fine. The $80k has a studio apmt by himself, the $65k shares a 2 bedroom with a friend. Both pay somewhere in the $1500k/mo range.

First off, that’s garbage. Probably have to live with 5 people or on 492nd st. So far up you probably can see Albany.
