Any of you ever live, for any amount of time, in New York City? If so, what was your experience there? Was it better or worse than you expected before you moved there? What are the pros and cons of living there? And also, are the rats as bad as they say?

Well, for one, my apartment overlooks the park which is obviously more expensive than Patrick Bateman’s place.

Rats mostly come out at night... Mostly..

And they're huge.

Lived and worked there for a time. It was ok. Nice experience to have but I wouldn't do it now.

Subway was a fun and easy way to get anywhere. It was very safe.

You have 2 options for dining: 99 cents for a slice of pizza or papaya dog or $300 to done inside at a restaurant.

Bleeker street was fun back in the day.

No, but did a tour as a recruiter in Albany. Aside from the beautiful scenery, that’s all it has going for. People fricking sucked.

Spent a number of years working in Manhattan and living in the outer boroughs. If you live in Louisiana and move to NYC, expect a massive drop in quality of life for the money you are currently spending. You will most likely either not need a car, can't afford to have a car, or move it every three days because of alternate side parking. Also acquaint yourself with brokers fees for renting apartments worth two months of rent on top of two months security deposit, and two months rent upfront. It's not uncommon to drop $15k to find and lease an apartment (not including actually paying a mover).

If you can get an annual salary north of $175k you will be comfortable but not rich. Also expect a lot of apartments to not have either a dishwasher, or a washer and dryer. Also expect to walk up a lot of steps. Lastly, acquaint yourself with NYC income tax (yes, that's in addition to NYS and federal income tax).

On the flip side NYC is (or was) home to amazing restaurants, bars, museums, and events-if you can afford it. NYC is also experiencing a massive exodus at the moment from people leaving the city.

In short NYC is amazing if you make $175k+. If you make less it will be a stretch and you will constantly be looking to either get a nicer apartment, get an apartment closer to work, or get something bigger.

I have seen rats bigger than some cats too

Yeah, I’m sure that’s temporary. Everything is cyclical and it’s still the greatest city on earth.

Never lived there but been many times, both for work and fun. Are you looking to move there? It’s expensive, but if you can adjust to cost of living you won’t regret it.

There will be plenty of people here who say it’s hell on earth. But they probably live in Prairieville or somewhere equivalent, so take it with a grain of salt.

I lived there in 2000 & 2001. I actually moved out a few months before 9/11. It was fun but definitely not my scene long term. I went for the same reason all guys do stupid shite, a woman.

It would be fun to be a young single guy if you can afford a decent place. I couldn't imagine raising a family there. I'm not really a big city guy though. I'm currently working on downsizing from BR

would love for real estate to come back down to earth a tad. Wife and I have bounced around the idea of purchasing a place in NYC this past year.

Yes. Lived there for ten years and just sold our apartment on the UES. How old are you and any thoughts about what kind of neighborhood you want?

Pros: it’s NYC. You can do just about anything you want.

Cons: you have a shithead running that place into the ground

4 years: 2004-2008. I lived in Hell's Kitchen and then Greenpoint (Brooklyn). It was expensive. Very expensive.

I ultimately decided to move because I wasn't really saving any money. I made a pretty good salary, but everything that came in seemed to go out. My savings, money market, and brokerage accounts were minuscule. In short, I would have been f**ked if something happened (laid off, got sick, etc.)

It was a fantastic four years though. I couldn't do it now. I was young and single. That itch has been scratched.

I was there last month. I refused to wear a mask outside and people gave me dirty stares and some tried to shame me. Food is ridiculously expensive. Went to a place with my cousin and a burger and fries cost $28. Small 10 inch pizza costs $30. All to be enjoyed on shitty arse dollar store plastic tables/chairs on the sidewalk since you can't eat inside. Which meant as we ate we got surrounded by a constant revolving door of Grub Hub/Door Dash/Uber Eats workers crowding the sidewalk.

Black Lives Matter murals everywhere. Anti Trump murals everywhere.
