BATON ROUGE - A 4-year-old girl was shot to death Friday night in a shootout between two vehicles that left one overturned in a ditch, police said. Authorities were called to the 500 block of South Flannery Road around 9 p.m. Shots were fired during an "altercation" between two drivers, police spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely said.

During the gunfire, the driver of the car in which the girl was a passenger lost control, careened off the road and overturned in a ditch, McKneely said.

Mayor Sharon Weston Broome and Police Chief Murphy Paul arrived at the crime scene around 11 p.m. The city's 2020 homicide count is significantly higher than typical for this point in the year and may break a record for annual killings.

Broome released the following statement overnight:

"What happened tonight is absolutely unacceptable and my heart is heavy. There are too many questions that need to be answered. The Baton Rouge Police Department will thoroughly investigate this case and get justice for the family and loved ones. The community has to honor this child’s life. If you know who did this, please contact the authorities immediately."

The fact that this young girl's death is going to be subject to politicization, sarcastic replies, and upvotes on this board is legitimately depressing. I'm not a father yet, but stories like this make me understand why fathers are so worried for their daughters.

I find it depressing that people like you are worried about the optics of this and not the root cause

Messed up. Someone needs to put an end to the violence. Lord knows the current administration will continue to turn a blind eye

If that’s my child I’m going straight Punisher mode. Anything less is unacceptable.

More depressing than her death and the root? You upset someone’s feelings may get hurt by this thread? More upset than the death and the root cause?

shite will stop when we start hanging some trash fairly quickly after a fair trail of course. Word about swift punishment gets around fast.

Only if the shooter was a white police officer.

Yeah most 4 year olds don’t have seven page rap sheets

Although she could have been riding in a white car

This problem is too far gone now. The only solution involves a time machine that can go back to 1985 (but seriously) where the government supplies every black family with a father instead of monetary assistance.

So her death should have absolutely no significance? Is it not worthy of discussion?

Or should we hold it in such reverence that it’s too sacred to discuss?

Feigned concerned and sympathy, paid the incident lip service then went home and went to bed with absolutely no more intention of preventing crime then they had when this girl was killed.

I’m a father of two girls. The thought of them being involved in a shootout between two vehicles has never once been a source of worry for me. Probably because I’d never pit them in such a situation. I’m more worried about them learning to read and be independent young women with morals and values.

I am so sad for this little girl that died, but she never had a chance.
