Armadillo Help
Posted on 8/31/20 at 9:58 pm

Some SOB is tearing up our yard at night. Suspecting it’s armadillos.
Any tips on how to get rid of them, short of posting up on watch all night?
Would snares work?

Snares wouldn't be easy to nearly impossible. Find their den (giant hole somewhere). After you find it, catching them is fairly easy as they are pretty dumb. You can set up some scrap wood to "funnel" them into a box trap. They walk right into it, no bait needed. Relocate afterwards.

Appreciate it. I know of one large hole cut into a ditch, not sure if they’re utilizing it but I can start there.

Beers and a baseball bat.

The box trap is the best I have seen. The snares has on the holes aren’t 100%, but are close if you can find the holes.
Take some scrap wood and make a funnel that leads them to a box trap. Frickers won’t jump the wooden funnel even if it’s a 1x6. They will run alongside it until they are in the box trap. You might have to look up the blueprints online. Just make sure your trigger is good.
Edit I meant conibear traps not snares.
P.s. Dont relocate. Kill on sight.

If you manage to trap it, DO NOT relocate it, kill it.

Why? I relocate them all the time.

Whatever you do don't kick it. I was drunk and it sounded like a good idea at the time. Jacked my ankle up for two weeks.

I use a driveway alert system. It's basically a motion sensor that alerts the base every time something passes. You can buy them for $20-$30 on Amazon. Set it up where it's been digging and put the receiver near your bed. When it alerts you, grab your flashlight and gun!

Nope. If it were an invasive species I'd kill it. It's just as easy for me to relocate it as it is to dump them out of the trap dead. I do the same with possums. I eat the coons.

I have some people on my shite list that can use it.

My uncle swears a .22 will work, but in his terms, you have to "feed it to him" meaning the only decent shot is to the face. I suppose a Judge might also work....

I'm not called Dillo for nothing.
If you can afford it get one of these, scented:
TAT
I've caught somewhere around 35 the last three summers. This is in the beds around my yard. I'm in the country in east Texas and they are really bad for the next month or so.
You don't need any ramps or wood fences to lead them in. Just set it and wait. I release mine alive along a walking trail on the other side of the lake I live on. I'm sure people who live there wouldn't like it. But I do relate them into the deep woods.
You can try to build a copy of this trap. If you do and you catch one in the scented trap, drop him into the new one. You will then have another scented trap.
