you can say that about any year....and if thats the case the top 5-10 project 1st rounders should just opt out every year....for the sake of argument...your argument sucks...if its because of the "virus" i can some what understand but even then when you break down facts....its a 99.96% chance of living

Spoke to a scout today. His take is that Chases decision makes perfect sense considering the strange circumstances this year and coming off about as perfect of a year as possible. He said the critical thing is taking this time to polish his skill set and be in tip top shape for the draft (that he can’t opt out of).....he said combine/workout participation is one thing he doesn’t have a say so in now.

Chase isn't dropping to 15 overall
He will be drafted right around 10

If that’s what they feel is best for them, then yes they should.

I lile how confident everybody is that Chase will just glide to the draft and nothing will change. He is a young guy, out of school, no job, nothing to do other than train a couple of hours a day. He is going to have a bunch of money in his pocket and loads of free time. I'd be terrified of all the things that can happen. Can he even get insurance while he is training?

Shelving will eat his way out of pro football. You can add him to a long list of players who left a year to early. At his weight though he would not have been a player you could have counted on as his body would have needed breaks. To bad he didn’t listen to his coach as I bet he never plays again.

I hate to say it but when the news on Shelvin hit my first reaction was who in the hell is gonna be on that young man to keep his weight down. It seems he was having this problem when he was with the program. I hope he can figure it out now that he is gone. I know he will be training but it's just not the same

My read on Shelvin is that he’s taking the path of least resistance.
He isn’t concerned with putting in the work to be great. He just wants to collect that check and he’ll check out. Let that be a Warning to nfl teams.

Shelvin might be making the greatest decision possible for himself. He wants to make a couple years of cash before the NFL contract get arse blasted by the incoming boycotts. #WokerThanWoke

That LSU is actually protecting them, bc they would've missed multiple games this year. And they're not the only ones.

The problem is, if that was really his goal, he could have put in one year of work to get potentially a first round contract with good guarantees. If he shows up to the combine out of shape, which wouldn't be surprising in the least given his history, there is no way he gets drafted there. Second round guarantees average about $3.7MM. Third round guarantees average about $950k. Once he takes out 5-10% for his agent, another 37% for federal income taxes, 4-10% for state income taxes depending on where he lands, and whoever else is one his payroll, that's leaves him with about 50% of the value of his contract. That's not enough money to just collect a check and check out. He'd have to figure out something else he can do to earn a living post-football. And for someone who struggled with grades and is leaving LSU without a degree, his options would be limited.
Now, if he played himself into a mid to late 1st round pick, we're talking about a range of $5-10 million in guarantees and $10-15 million in total contract value, and were he too invest/spend properly, he could get paid and sit on his arse the rest of his life.
So, from a financial standpoint, it was a very poor decision on his part to quit. All these guys allude to this being a business decision for their family. Well, there are also plenty of guys who make poor business decisions, and I believe Shelvin made a poor one.

Moreover, Tyler's biggest issue has been his ability to stay in shape. Now he is going to opt out. So instead of being answerable to Coach O and Bo Pelini, he will be answerable to a personal trainer who he is paying. That's an obvious concern and a risk.
If Tyler couldn't get in shape before the season, then he did the right thing by opting out and taking a full year to shape up.

Yep, he goes from a coaching staff riding him and holding him accountable to him being solely accountable for himself. If he doesn't want to train one day, he doesn't have to. No one is going to punish him or get on to him. And he has 8 months to go until the draft. If he already showed up to fall camp at 375 after having 4-5 months off since spring practice ended, that doesn't bode well for him showing up to the combine where he needs to be.

If he can't show up to fall camp in shape, what makes you think it's a good idea or likely he'll do any better when he's not in a regimented program with coaches riding his arse for the next 8-9 months?

He can sign with an agent and be paid to do so. $$$

They're both bad decisions. One is just worse than the other.
