RICHMOND, Va. – A controversial bill is moving forward during the current Virginia General Assembly special session.

On Wednesday, the Virginia Senate voted 21-15 to pass Senate Bill 5032, which would allow an assault against a law enforcement officer to a misdemeanor if the person attacked is not hurt.

Here’s the summary of the bill:

Eliminates the mandatory minimum term of confinement for an assault and battery committed against a judge; magistrate; law-enforcement officer; correctional officer; person directly involved in the care, treatment, or supervision of inmates; firefighter; or volunteer firefighter or any emergency medical services personnel and provides that such crime can no longer be committed as a simple assault and must result in a bodily injury.

This is what you get when suburban voters elect “moderate” Democrats to their state house

Uh, those NoVA voters are just to the left of Chairman Mao. There's nothing moderate about any of them, or who they vote for.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with this. They shouldn't get special treatment because they have a uniform.

Is assault against a lay person a misdemeanor too? If so, no biggie.

So someone can just walk up and slap a cop now? Sounds great and will lead to many shootings

Most people aren’t arresting criminals

Empowering idiots to crowd around and frick with cops will just continue to bring about incidents like Floyd, Jacob, etc

Good.

Unless/until every LEO in the country is equipped with BWC that they actually use, allowing a paradigm in which said LEO can claim to be "attacked" with zero corroborating evidence and hit someone with a felony is a bad one. Even with BWC, I've personally seen police reports that painted the arrested individual as the aggressor when the LEO was simply covering their own arse because they kicked the shite out of the guy.

If the action against a citizen is a misdemeanor, there's no reason for it to be a felony simply because the action was taken against a LEO.

At least now citizens can beat the crap out of political activist judges and just do a little roadside trash pickup for it.

So you can assault a judge if you don't like his ruling?

People are going to try to argue there shouldn’t be hate crimes either (duh, of course not), but two wrongs don’t make a right. The courts give LEOs plenty of privileges. This one is unnecessary.
