Saying I didn’t pay my taxes. I went to the bank and the check was cashed (a bunch of numbers and the first 4 letters of my last name are on the back). I went to IRS.gov and it was no help. I called the IRS and they said they were not taking anymore calls that day.

I will try to call again Monday. Anyone else had this issue and how did you resolve it? They got my return because they know what I owed and are already trying to charge me a late fee

It'll be a pain in the arse to get them to correct it for sure, but you'll be fine. Just get someone on the phone on Monday

Are you sure the IRS cashed it and that it wasn’t cashed by a scammer? You might check with your bank to make sure that it actually went to the IRS. The bank should be able to verify if they handle payroll tax deposits if they handle them.

Not the same problem, but we got a letter a couple of years ago saying we owed over $35,000 in back taxes, penalties. Somehow a 1099 for $680 was entered by the IRS as $68,000. I wrote a letter with copies of documentation attached. It took a while, but they cleared it up and acknowledged we didn’t owe the money. Was not fun to open that initial letter from them.

Kirby59 I did as well. The company that does my filings said the IRS is incredibly backed up due to COVID. Spoke with a rep on the phone who said to mail in signed papers copy. Company said they already did that. Basically said just to be patient and wait.

Get copy of front and back side of cleared check and send back with letter. Someone else got credit for it and they need to see the back of check to see where it got posted. Happens more than u know.

I got a letter from a collection agency claiming I didn’t pay 2018 Louisiana taxes. It is a bit odd since they cashed my check. Also strange that the first time they reached out was through a third party collection agency.

Bunches of these letters went out last week and they are all BS. Big problem.

This is the result of agencies having incompetent employees, faulty and old technology, and a lack of funding.

You do realize you can set up an online IRS account today and view the last 4 years transcripts and ROAs right?

No need to call just yet. If its a clerical error and the payments ARE in the transcript then call. If the payments are not shown then you need to start with the bank, not IRS.

A few of our clients received these this week, the IRS cashed the check but I assume it was applied to someone else.

Good luck..try getting a tax advocate in the state which you reside in..file an appeal.
