It might be all in my head but I can count on one hand how many times I've pulled my 3-wood during a round in the last ten years. I usually either top it or shank it straight out of bounds so I don't even pull it out anymore. I've decided to go to the range and hit buckets until I figure it out.
Where do you play the ball in your stance? Is it like a driver swing? iron swing? Should I take a small divot or am I trying to sweep the ball?
Help. I want to hit a par 5 in two someday.

Off the tee, yes.

On the ground, hit down on it like a hybrid. If you’re topping it, you’re too far away from the ball

If you more of an iron player, get a 2i UDI

The driver is the only club where you truly try to hit up on the ball. Even a 3wood needs to be “trapped” to some extent. You don’t want a divot like an iron but you better be cutting some grass. The 3 wood is made to keep you from chunking it too badly. Same with hybrids. It’s why they’re so popular with bad ball strikers. You can be more aggressive and be more confident. Back to the 3W... Choke up. Get closer. Put it about halfway between center line and your leading foot. Hit it like you would a 5 iron. And quit being a pussy when you swing. Tensing up and being scared to swing hard (your normal swing) is what causes most people topping any club.

Where are you playing it at in your stance currently? Try middle of stance and 3/4 swing until contact is consistent.

And it should be more of a sweep it off the turf swing like a driver rather than hitting down on the ball like an iron

forward 1/3 of your stance / it's more of a driver swing than an iron but you do need to trap it, more than sweep it / small divot or mostly rustled grass

Best advice I've heard or given, is to not over-swing the club (swing too hard or try to get more out of it than you have). That is where you will see the worst of your shots with that club.

Really need some decent speed to hit/launch a 3wood. 5wood may be more effective and longer for you.

That being said, dont try to kill it, slightly down on it gives a little more margin for error imo

took my 3 wood and 60 degree wedge out of my bag. I can hit my 3 or 4 hybrid if I need a 200-220 yard shot

Used to be me As well. Only in the past month or so have I been ripping my 3 wood. It’s sat mostly clean and unused in the bag for a decade lol.

I think for me it was mental. I told myself I needed to use it cuz it was wasting space in the bag and I was tired of always laying up. I still don’t always catch it perfect, but it’s been really good so far.

Just got to trust yourself and make a nice swing on it. My ball position feels like it’s in between driver and mid irons. I’m not quite playing it off my front heel, but also not in the middle of my stance. It may be 3-5 inches off my front heel, but I’ve never checked as it’s mostly a feeling of up in the stance but not as up as a driver

This is exactly where I'm at.
I usually play the ball middle of my stance. I don't carry a 5-wood but I can hit my 3 hybrid decently. My brother in law carries a 7 wood he said I could probably hit.
I usually shoot high 80s low 90s so I'm not completely terrible but the 3-wood I just can't figure out.

Move the ball up, choke up, hit slightly down on it, get after it.
Gonna hit the range after work

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

The way I get success is I feel like I'm going to dribble it down the fairway if I hit it. Smooth easy swing and then watch it fly.

I carry a utility iron for this exact reason. 3-wood has left the bag lol

This is the only way Im able to hit my 3 wood consistently straight with some distance

Problem is that when I do it goes as far as my 4 iron, right around 200-210

When I swing hard and make good contact the 3 wood will go 230 or even more

Problem is that only works 1 out of 25 times. The other 24 times I swing hard at it, i top it or it slices like crazy

It has often been said that the 3 wood is the hardest club to fit most golfers.

That's why most Pro's are reluctant to change out their 3 wood when new stuff comes out.

I played a Cally 2 wood for years until the shaft broke. It took me years and dozens of clubs to get back to a comfortable spot. (Currently hitting the Ping G410)

I agree that even off the tee, you have to brush the grass, it's a hard club to stay down on because you want to help it get the ball up off the deck.

My exact problem too. I can only hit it straight by swinging at about 60-70%. But then there’s not much reason to even carry it because I can hit a 4 iron 200 yds.

You might want to look into getting a new 3wood you feel comfortable with.

I have an RBZ, I can hit the damn thing near 270-280 if I get into it but i swear I top it or duck hook it 7/10 times.

Conversely I recently started experimenting with hitting my driver off the deck (also RBZ). I was striping that thing 250-260 right down the pipe, maybe I should start trying it out during a round...

If you shank a 3 wood OB you need lessons ASAP. What's your typical score?
