Shopping for a console for 10 yr olds birthday...help!

My son turns 10 in October and he’s asking for a game console.
He seems to be looking to play baseball and football games. I know his buddies play fortnite. I’d rather stay away as long as I can from that.
Should I look at Xbox? I haven’t played in years so I don’t know what the better game console is and what is potentially coming out soon. I don’t want to buy something out of date.
Thanks!

keep in mind the new generations are coming soon. IE they will stop making games for the one and ps4 in the next year or so. on the bright side they will be cheaper soon.
to answer your original question, i prefer my play station. havent turned on my xbox one on in a year. My gaming pc provides everything it has and is much more powerful.

Ultimately, get the console his friends are playing on. Even if you don't get him fortnite, he will be able to play other games with them.
If he wants baseball though, playstation is the option.

Switch?
Typically the Nintendo consoles are much more kid friendly.

New gen of consoles coming out in November. The should be announcing the specifics by the end of August, they have all been delaying this information so a bunch is speculation especially price. I would suggest going next gen because he would likely be disappointed at Christmas when all his friends get the new ones and he has an old console, you will be hit back up for a new console within 2 years for sure. The biggest thing would be to find what console his friends have and go with that, either sony or xbox. Below is a breakdown of the new consoles.
Xbox Series X - top of the line - estimate in price $450-$650. Gamepass w/ online costs 15 bucks a month but will give him access to all the game he will need so you wont really need to buy many games, maybe madden.
Xbox Series S - (rumored) budget version of next gen, likely wont be great but should be in the $300 - $450 range. Gamepass again.
PS5 - $450 - $650 (diskless version for a little less, no thoughts on pricing yet), likely will have better games, but may a big deal for him because these are mostly not age appropriate for him yet quite yet.

Ask him what his friends play on. If that is not a factor I would look at waiting for the Xbox Series X or S with Game Pass. Gamepass is basically Netflix for gaming.

So do Xbox or playstations Play actual disc games or are all these consoles using game pass? Do some systems allow for both?

Both xbox one and ps4 play real discs, but most games are available by digital download as well. PS4 does not have a good comparison to the xbox game pass. If you go for the next gen (which again, i recommend since they will be out very soon) the ps5 will have two versions, one that run discs and one that has no disc drive. The one without the disc drive is presumably cheaper. I can say for sure about the xbox but there is speculation they will be different versions of the Xbox next gen.

They allow for both but the Playstation 5 will have a disc less version. The Xbox will have a cheaper version as well that may or may not have a disc drive. Playstation does have a Gamepass like service but its not as good imo b/c it requires streaming for most games and the selection imo is not as good either. That may change. I would talk to your kid about the options and wait until the new systems prices and launched dates are settled.
One other thing to consider would be Xbox All Access. It like a buying phone contract where you get the system and the Gamepass service for a 2 year contract and options to upgrade after so many payments. You could get him a Xbox One X (dont bother with an S) which is still going to run games great for another year and then upgrade to a Series X or S. Here is a link to the service LINK

Honestly, I’d just wait for November for the new consoles.
