Apocalypse Now question

Just finished this movie and dang, what a brutal movie. Especially the water buffalo slaying that is actually real. My question is the writing in Kurtz typed pages that says drop the bomb on them all. So is it assumed he wanted the army to kill all the villagers that worshipped him?

Kurtz wanted to win the war. He knew the US was not going about it the right way and was holding back. They had to get more brutal and forget the past rules. The bomb kills em all.
Kurtz ultimately didn't care about anyone... His guys, the enemy, nonone. He liked Willard because he saw himself in him. He become a crazed maniac who didn't even want to live himself. He only loved death and despair.

Rare stills of Harvey Keitel as Willard. He was replaced by Martin Sheen three weeks into shooting.

They were gonna make me a major for this and I wasn't even in their fricking army anymore.

LINK ]Orson Welles/Mercury Theater On The Air - "Heart of Darkness" (November 6, 1938)
Welles produced this radio version of Conrad's story the week after his infamous "War Of The Worlds" broadcast. It's especially significant as "HoD" was the property he went to Hollywood intending to film.
Welles with a model of the paddleboat he planned to use for his never-made film of Heart Of Darkness.

There's a great interview with Milius and Coppola about the writing of Apocalypse Now. LINK
Milius was so motivated by the fact that Welles couldn't figure it out or get it made for the screen.
He used Vietnam War stories of his buddies to flesh out the bizarre nature of it all. He then infused his own surfing culture into it.
He also completely came up with the Air Cav scenes. It's genius stuff. It's why I always say the Apocalypse Now script is one of the best ever... Well, except the ending. Once he gets to Kurtz, the film takes a nosedive.

I dunno. Hopper saves the Kurtz scenes.

In fairness, they had to basically rewrite the ending on the fly when Brando showed up looking like fricking Butterbean.

All of this plus I always assumed that the tribal folks around Kurtz were supposed to portray the Montagnard tribe that the US special forces fought with against the NVA and Viet Cong.

I disagree. The ending takes it from a decent war movie to a deeply psychotic epic.

I think he abhorred their worship of him as coming from the dark side of humanity.

You want to see a nice take on this, check out a short called "Porklips Now". It was made sometime in the 70's and is a direct takeoff of "Apocalypse Now" starring Billy Gray.
Gray got his start in TV in the early 60's playing Bud on the show "Father Knows Best" and was Patricia Neal's kid in the 1951 movie "The Day The Earth Stood Still" with Michael Rennie as the alien.
