Rental car question

Anybody have rental car situations where you may have scratched or dented a rented car? I know I got the insurance because it came with the rental policy. But I’m figuring that is more for a pretty significant wreck.
I slightly scraped the front bumper parking by tapping a wall and the charge is $650! So slight were the scratches that touch up paint could have probably fixed it.
I’m guessing these insurance policies on the cars have a deductible and that’s where I got popped.

Why don't you read the contract you signed and then follow that contract?

must have been pretty noticeable. typically your credit card has built in insurance if its a good card. My Platinum Amex does this whenever i used to travel for work.

This is why I pay with AMEX or buy their insurances. I don’t want crap to deal with when I bring it back. On four wheels or two:

You should have touched up the paint, or ripped the bumper off and got your money's worth.

Who did you rent the car from?
That's why I don't think it's worth it to use cheap rental car companies. SixT, Dollar, Fox, etc. all seem to have one thing in common from reading reviews. They will price gouge you for minor scratches when you turn it in.

Got a rock chip in Florida. Told the check in dude that it was already there. Problem solved.

rental car companies are self insured.

Enterprise is notorious for this.
I'll pay more to not rent from Enterprise.
When you turn in a car, they actually use one these every time --
So, if you ever rent from Enterprise, make sure you maticulously go around the car before you sign any rental agreements -- even underneath the bumpers. I read an article a few years back where some guy sued them because they were trying to charge him thousands of dollars for some dent on the underside of the back bumper that wasn't visible upon a regular inspection. It turned out that they had charged at least 3 other customers for the same "damage" to the same car.

Look at what you actually bought...if you added the “insurance” then you should not have to pay anything. This is technically not insurance that you are buying. You are buying a LDW or loss damage waiver from the rental company, which means they can’t come after you if the car is damaged at all. So there’s no deductible.
So either you bought that and you are good. Or you didn’t, and you have to pay for the damage (cash or making a claim on your own insurance).
As others have noted, check your credit card. I have an airline card that insures against this loss.
If you end up at a dead end and have to pay cash, I would push back on the amount. Ask them for evidence of the cost and tell them you want independent estimates...they may tell you to frick off, but it may give you some negotiating leverage to pay a little less. If you have photos of the damage, you could maybe bring to a couple body shops to see if they will give you an estimate. Insured do estimates from photos all the time. Again, could help you negotiate a better price.

I would have gone directly to an auto parts store, bought a $10 touchup paint and tried my best to fix it enough to make it unnoticed.

I can’t figure out what this thread is about. If you bought insurance from the rental car company then you shouldn’t owe a single dollar.

When you got the car, did someone come out and go over existing damage with you, circle the damage on a picture, etc? If not, how can they prove you did the damage?
I use Avis Preferred and they just email me the location and I get it and drive. I have rented from other places at the airport and they do the same thing. Go to the counter, hand me the keys, and I leave. No one inspects the car going out (at least at the airports I use).

We were bird hunting in NODAK with some friends and my wife shot a hole though the floorboard of a rental. Luckily the barrel (20g) was pushed down directly on the floor so the hole was no bigger then a quarter and did not hit any other components on the way down. We swapped the floor mats around and never heard anything else about it.

In CKY2K they paid the extra $9 and blew up the car.
Hope you paid the extra $9

That card is huge too. I've rented from them dozens of times and never had a single issue.

That Enterprise damage card seems overly generous to me. The "burn" circle looks like it's about the size of a pencil eraser. So if you burn a seat but the mark is only 2/3 the size of a pencil eraser, you're off the hook? That's stupid.
