Difference in HVAC Prices

Posted in the H/G board, figured more people are here though.
AC is busted, and no piece is newer than 17 years old. Got some quotes today, all for 5 ton 16 seer system either Rheem/Ruud or Carrier, 80% gas furnace, everything replaced up to plenum. I'm looking at
$9700 (Rebel)
$8700 (Climate AC)
$6400 (PVT Air out of Holden, a rec)
Two more arriving tomorrow. What's the thought on these prices? The $6400 jumps out as so much lower, but Brian Cass the self owner was very informative and knowledgeable, wondering why such the big price difference. Any suggestions?

My best friend owns an HVAC company. I was concerned about what brand I wanted him to put in for me and he said, “ cold air is cold air, as long as I warranty the work and system you’re good”. So I’d say go with the cheaper system and make sure they have a good warranty.

Huge profit margin in AC systems so you are doing the right thing by getting bids.

That's what I was leaning. So far all the same 1 year labor, 10 year parts warranty. None of these guys are probably so bad at installs that anything would show up in the first year. Want to make sure I have a quality install. If it wasn't for the rec, the much cheaper price might be more of a red flag.

I would just ask them why they are so much lower...they might be gonna do as much as some of the others. For instance, some may plan to use the old copper and others aren’t, or some may be going to take your new unit apart, while others are planning to drop the ladder to your attic and bring the unit up without taking it apart. I’ve always heard a good bit of how the unit performs depends on the installation.

Installed my own 3 ton electric in April for 3200

$6,400 sounds like a fair price. That’s solid equipment and at that price it allows the guy to make a fair profit. The other two are going to do the same thing just make $4-$5,000 profit

It's well over 100F in attics these days. If the guy that sets the price is doing the work it's higher than the guy that has kid apprentices taking shortcuts on the install.

Let me give you another recommendation...Central Heating and Air, this is who I always recommend in these threads and have had 2 posters start threads over the years thanking me. They are a Trane distributor and have yet to see anybody beat their prices.

Anything below 9k is a decent price. Check on the service plans, warranty, etc...

Are they replacing the distribution ducts? If so are they using the cheaper done flexible tubes or are they making sheet metal runs to every room?
New thermostat?
Replacing the copper lines? They are switching genotypes so indefensible be replaced or properly flushed.
New drain pan?
New heater exhaust ducting?
I highly recommend a two speed or variable speed unit. At high demand times it will run on high speed. On cooler days or at night, it will run on lower speed. Much more consistent temps in the house.

op, you’re gonna want to check that they replace the ducts after the fact. Especially that low ball.
Duct work ain’t cheap.
As far as “cold air is cold air’,’ Find the coldest air at meter pole.

a 5 ton unit is more than you need for 2400 sq ft. You want the system to fit the house because you actually want it to run enough to ventilate and "condition" the house. They should be using Manual J load calculations which takes into consideration lots of factors like size, insulation, roofing, siding, window type and direction most windows and doors face, etc
edit to say that it's often wise to avoid a contractor that is way lower than others, but if that one contractor is a guy, a helper, and a work van and the other guys are business men or wannabe businessmen with hourly installers, nice building with offices and overhead, and several crews with new vans and trucks, then the difference is obvious. In a case like that you often get a better contractor with the guy that has a helper and a van and works from home. Check with your county inspectors. They may not be supposed to recommend contractors but privately they often will give you a list of 2 or 3 names. At least require references and check them out. Course, a crook will give you references that are often friends and family that he hasn't yet ripped off.

I had both units replaced in 2015, 2.5 ton, inside and outside, cost me $8600. Trane 14 seer.

Look at this 5 ton Goodman 10yr warranty condenser and coil for $2200. What’s labor to install these 2, $150 at 10hrs? Probably can do it in 5. No reason to pay more than 4K. Is your furnace even broke?
