Coworker/friend just lost his wife of 20 years to cancer They have one 15 year old daughter who is into books and music. Wondering what to send him/them rather than just flowers

I'd go with a thoughtful card or hand-written note.
A gift for the daughter is a nice thought, but from personal experience, a grieving family isn't looking for gifts right now.

I have never really heard of death gifts, but have heard of donations being made in the person’s honor. You could make a donation to the American Cancer Society in her honor.

I'd consider a donation to a local organization that may have helped them out -- and maybe a gift card for dinner? It'll alleviate stress of cooking at least one meal and will get them out of the house.
And prayers for them -- as a mom, I can't imagine my husband with a 15 yo. He'd figure it out but this isn't how it's supposed to happen.

Give your coworker a few bucks to put toward his daughters college fund and a nice Italian dinner

set up a calendar for friends and family to bring them meals. Also, ask people to volunteer for things like cleaning the house, laundry and shopping for them.

I understand your desire to show compassion, but if I just lost my wife of 20 years to cancer, I’m not interested in a gift. I would do my best to be there for my friend on a personal level. Be an ear and shoulder for him as he works through an unimaginable process.

A meal, hand written card and get the daughter a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble.

Send him a card, call him in a couple of weeks and invite them over for steaks.

I think a handwritten card would be a nice gesture, and then maybe a month or two down the road when you can tell its a rough day take him out for drinks. They will get all kinds of food and stuff now, so its nice to do something later on in my opinion.

Gift card to dinner is the right answer here.
That guy doesn't want a thoughtful note from you talking about how sorry you are for him. A donation to an organization, unless they asked for one, isn't helping him out either. The dinner will mean something.

Make a donation in the wife's memory to The American Cancer Society.
