I cannot even fathom what life was like during WWII for the average person

Living in America most of the young men you knew were probably gone and many would never come back. I’m sure you lived in fear of surprise attacks like Pearl Harbor or god forbid losing the war and an invasion of the United States. Not to mention rationing of supplies and goods. Kids out collecting scraps for the war effort.
If you were a European citizen you basically had destruction and death all around you whether it was in site or not but you knew it was there and could be on your doorstep quickly.
I think about how comfortable life overall is today and the absolute shock and sacrifice it would take for people to have to put up with that today. I’m not sure the American people could withstand it. It’s hard to imagine us all pulling the rope in the same direction like that to fight for liberty and our own survival.

Without the internet and cable news to spread misinformation & whip up dissent and hysteria, I'm thinking most people could deal.

Can you imagine today’s snowflake citizenry who think wearing a mask violates their freedom being told to eat less meat, donate their metal items, and grow victory gardens?

If it did happen now, it sure would put all the insignificant things some are sniveling about out to pasture.

Think modern America would survive something like the Blitz?

We won and it was a huge victory and a lot of people supported it after pearl. But the truth was that many people were still against it. Many people complained about the rationing. We just don’t care or hear about that side because it’s pretty irrelevant. But it existed.

I'm sure there was a somewhat uneasy feeling at the time, but I would much prefer to have been here France, London, Poland, Western Russia, or China back then. The two big arse oceans are a pretty big security blanket.

I think about that as well. People today have no idea what sacrifice means. We’re talking rationing, Victory gardens, women working manufacturing lines, men going to the front lines, etc.
People today have no idea how bad things could be and I sometimes wonder if we need something like to make people realize the petty shite we are working today.

If you were a young man and stateside you had to chase off pussy with a stick, always look for the silver lining.

I recently rewatched Band of Brothers. From Normandy, Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, to Bastogne.. I don't know how they did it.
They truly were the greatest generation.

“Soldiers getting ready to land in Normandy, blissfully unaware of the hardships black people would face in America in the year 2020”

No but I imagine a lot would be much more understanding if the world was actually at war versus a virus.

No, and I doubt modern Great Britain would either.

Meat thing would get me. That and refusing to fight someone's war.

You think that life is comfortable today????? This virus makes a ton of people uncomfortable for what is going on in this country. And Americans were a lot tougher back then than they are now..... plus if there ever is a WW3 we would dominate everyone else.

I am a pretty pessimistic dude but I believe in the American spirit. We may fight amongst ourselves and whine but if anyone fricks with us, we come out swinging.
Post 9/11 showed that even if our direction was off target. We are a pretty hardy people overall and our temper is a world beater.

I shudder to think what this would be like today.

We absolutely would, there was a shite ton of pansies back then also that just aren’t talked about. There’s also a shite ton of hard asses in America today, they also just aren’t talked about. Just a few years ago American troops were walking around Falluja and other cities with IEDs and snipers, and suicide bombers, and taking a lot of losses. They’d no doubt defend our home turf against an invasion and no doubt the local populace would rise up and fill the gaps with our own weaponry.

By the same government that put people in concentration camps.
