Public School Funding Debates

This is another big leftists talking point that inner city public schools are underfunded. Is that actually true? I thought the USA spends among the most in the world per capita. How are most public schools funded? I personally believe it’s a BS argument because we spend 9000-10000 per pupil in Louisiana which is more the some very good private schools who see much better results.

Schools are underfunded see Texas as why they went to ISD. Go look in a Title I school and ask if it is underfunded, the answer is yes.

The schools are underfunded, but the bloated bureaucracy of inner city school systems is flush with cash. Administrators and politically-connected consultants need to be paid somehow.

If they get the federal assistance wouldn’t they not be underfunded then?

Any data with this opinion? Genuinely interested to understand your POV.

Well, we mostly have morons making decisions about how to spend education dollars and defining what constitutes "education". These morons will always always always point to lack of funding or some other issue as the cause of problems for which they themselves are to blame.
We could educate public school students just as well, at least, while spending nowhere near the hundreds of billions we currently spend on public education, but the truth is that educating students is pretty low on the priority list for the system as a whole.

Yeah but how are you going to be able to afford all those assistant superintendents and assistant principals if we cut back on funding schools??

federal assistance
Not necessarily. Think of the tax base that Title I schools are pulling from. The federal assistance does not cover all costs of operating a school. The Title I school I work in has had to take most of it's budget this year to upgrade to accommodate new building codes instead of supplies. Then you also have to the items such as PTO Booster Clubs, etc that provide a modicum of funding, which most Title I do not have.
Now if you go 25 miles to the east of me where Walmart Corp is that school district is overfunded because of reasons I listed above.
I can not speak about the stupidity of some school boards, like NOLA and Little Rock, but I can tell you that in smaller rural schools you have to rob Peter to pay Paul.

Remove all of the unions and recount it.

Yes, there are many school districts that are funded less than wealthier districts, but DC school district is one of the best funded districts in the nation, and it still graduates massive numbers of illiterates. Race is a much greater factor than income level in predicting student performance. Even upper income Blacks have a lower avg SAT than lower income Whites, aka, trailer trash. LINK

Nice way to take a cheap shot at a union. You know the union is not to blame it is the leadership of the union. My state is a right to work state and there is only one union of teachers it is in the capital.

87 cents of every dollar spent on public k-12 education comes from your local county property taxes.
the federal gubberment provides less than 6% of k-12 public education funding.
so any time you hear a politician talk about spending for "MUH EDMACATION!" what they are really saying is...blah..blah...blah...bullschit...bullschit..bullschit
....blah....blah....blah!

I think The argument is how the money is distributed. The arguments I’ve seen is that richer school districts pump money into schools for rich kids in those rich school districts.
Idk if that holds up in Louisiana with our insanely high rate of private schooling
But honestly I don’t know enough about school budgets to even begin to really make a comment on this.

The reason schools are underfunded is because of their pension liabilities. I would guess over 50% of all tax dollars for straight to pension funding. I've heard buy side mangers claim it's almost 70% in some areas like California.

No it is not. But think it is.

We've proven time and time again that throwing money at a situation doesn't make it better in education. It's a huge talking point because they think one school has less than others. When the reality is they have the same, just one school has students/parents that care and the other doesn't. So over time one school starts running low on computers, books, etc while the other school appears to now have more.

Texas went the ISD route to provide more local control for schools. That is entirely different than it being underfunded.
Texas schools were eating money left and right based on idiotic bureaucracy wasting a huge chunk of funding that was ruining the schools.

So we are assuming a single classroom has approximately $200,000 in funding to maintain it for the year?
I think if they had to go through public schools and do a value analysis for every position and process it would be scary.

Bigger issues are wasting funds on trying to pass every kid rather than educating them. I have a family member in high school admin and she spends more of her time trying to make sure kids graduate so the school meets minimum required graduation rates as to not get into deep trouble. This includes tracking down delinquent students and their families to get them to show up.
Unions had their place historically but have only served purpose of hurting good teachers while protecting the shite teachers that ruin be system with their laziness.
