Harvey Williams thinks if Arnsparger had stayed LSU that they win it all in 1987. So what do you all think? Memories of the season?

Arnsparger was good but always seemed to blow a game he had no business losing
Lsu was not on a talent level like fla st and Miami
Those Nebraska and Oklahoma teams were legit too as well as Notre Dame
LSU’s 80’s schedules were no joke either
They played some serious non conf schedules along with sec schedule
They had home and homes with Notre dame and Ohio st
Played Miami and fla st
It was brutal

A lot of talent on that team. Had no idea that Pete Jenkins was our DC that year until I just looked it up.

We tied Ohio St and lost to Bama. Would have been #3 playing in the sugar if we had won those games. It wouldnt have mattered as far the national championship; Oklahoma and Miami would have still met in the Orange as #1 and #2 in a winner take all. Those were great teams.

Yes, Arnsparger had top 5 teams but I don’t see how LSU could have gotten past the real powerhouses to win an NC, even if he had stayed.

Should have never tied Ohio State. LSU was far better and should have ran them out of the stadium. The Bama game was weird as were all of the games against them back then. Guidry started and was ineffective. Hodson came on late and did nothing playing on one leg. I don't think they could have won a title with Arnsparger. As great as that team was talent wise, they didn't seem to have a killer instinct.

‘87 was Mike Archer and the talent was there, but the Head Coaching lacked.

New Year's Eve Party after the game at our small hotel lounge in Jacksonville was one of the most fun nights of my life.

Our group of about 12 partied with some older cool South Carolina fans. I think we drank the bar dry.

As far as the 1987 football team goes, they outplayed Ohio State and should have won.

Miami and Oklahoma both went undefeated and there was little doubt as to the NC game matchup.

LSU's tie with Ohio State effectively ended any shot at a national championship.

As an aside, LSU and Tulane had an epic game in the Superdome in 1987 (41-36 LSU).

I was 13 years old and it was the first year I was really a fan (attended my first game in 1986). Tommy Hodson to Wendell Davis was and unbelievable combination.

Ron Sancho & Eric Hill at LB on defense along with Chris Carrier at Safety - Harvey Williams & Sammy Martin with Nacho blocking (Dr Nacho now) on offense...

One flaw that Arnsparger always had was his bend but don't break defense (I know Archer was HC in '87, but was same defense)... soft between the 20's, but would tighten up. Wasn't a real attacking defense like we see in recent years.

One of the more underrated and overlooked games in LSU history. Jones/Zeno were straight up studs.

Yep, I was there top row of the terrace 50 yard line.

Harvey tore up his knee on what should have been a short TD run. The hole was big enough to drive a truck through, no one touched him he went down like a someone shot him.

They were second tier talent back then. Had excellent skill position players but lacked real talent and depth across the lines of scrimmage.

A lot of luck would have to have been had to win it all.
