my wife's best friend's husband does it at mammoth caves in KY. only one of 6 people allowed by the feds to do it. he has a grant to map the entire system.

he is a little guy; maybe 140lbs soaking wet and he's in his 60s now but extremely fit.

he was just featured on expeditionX in a show they did on mammoth.

he goes down for weeks at a time cant even imagine it. some of the stories he tells me are crazy.

So we are talking about diving in underwater caves, right? Cave diving isn't just an expression for people who explore above ground caves?

I remember cave diving (scuba) with two friends at the Blue Grotto cave (~120 ft down) in FL when I was a teenager. First time cave diving. Only one of us had a light. Way back in the cave the guy with the light decides to see what total blackness is and turns off the light. My self and the other buddy like to have crapped in our wetsuits. With out that light, I doubt we would have ever made it out. He finally turned the light back on.

We almost beat the crap out of him when we got back out at the surface. I never, ever, dove again without my own light.

Used to do Cave diving a long time ago with my Dad. He was a certified Salvage diver and went a lot of places.

This gives me so much anxiety.

I watched the coverage of the Thailand cave rescues because it was such a fascinating (and ultimately happy) story, but I was a wreck the entire time.

I helped out in some scuba classes back when I did some diving. One of the drills was to line your mask with aluminum foil then have you and a partner search the bottom of the pool for a quarter. It was hilarious to watch how quickly people became totally disoriented, but not so funny when you were doing the drill yourself. I poked my nose in a couple of caves, but nah, not something I was ever into.

Back in my firefighting days we used to do confined space rescue training and I always dreaded those days really bad. I cannot imagine throwing scuba diving into that equation. Just the thought of something going wrong with your gear and you are hundreds of feet below the surface of the water with a maze of tunnels to go through to get back...you have no chance.

Ughh, makes my skin crawl thinking about it.
