re: Mississippi's five largest hospitals are out of ICU beds as coronavirus cases surge

SO much ignorance....
Elective surgery doesn’t typically strain ICU.
Hospitals are built and staffed for icu to be maxed out during peak season. We can’t prepare to have excess capacity or we would be bankrupt. You want us to be prepared for every what if scenario? Increase our reimbursement, and decrease our regulatory burden. A third of the payroll in a hospital is doing regulatory reporting bullshite.

Or preventative medicine to keep Morris Bart on his yacht.

While that sounds bad, it sounds bad. I'm not in the medical field so I don't know what I'm talking about; but my "buddy" that works ER (not at UMC)said that ICU beds are typically 80-90% full (pre Covid). And when we here stats about all ICU beds being full those are the dedicated beds and that every hospital that has ICU beds has an additional 10-20% that they can convert to ICU within an hour or two to accommodate an overload from a disaster and/or COVID.
Yes its bad but not as dire as the MSM would lead you to believe. My $0.02.

Maybe there would be more ICU beds if the dumbasses in Jackson would stop shooting each other daily.

We've only had 3-5 per week which is normal no matter the year or conflict.

How many ICU beds are taken for something other than Covid?

Dr. Marc Boom with Houston Methodist: “What you’ve been hearing is a report that we are at 97 percent or so capacity across the Texas medical center. At Houston Methodist, we’re somewhere in the low 90s right now in terms of capacity of ICU beds, but let me put that in perspective … June 25 2019, exactly one year ago … It was at 95 percent. We are highly experienced at utilizing our ICU beds for the sickest of the sick patients day in day out … and it is completely normal for us to have ICU capacities that run in the 80s and 90s. That’s how all of us operate hospitals, and how all hospitals operate.”
I was having this discussion just the other day. Explaining that while yes, cases are increasing, the ICU utilization is pretty normal. For one, they don’t build more hospitals than we need. It’s not like we build them for the hell of it. The want them to near maximum capacity otherwise it would be a huge drag financially. And secondly, a lot of the recent ICU utilization is attributed to the backlog of so called “elective” procedures. Many of which have really become necessary due to prolonged waiting.
ETA. Have! Not, have not...

Wonderful. WTF does that have to do with Mississippi?

Nobody gets an “elective” procedure and then goes to the ICU, unless the surgery goes severely wrong. They go to a designated floor until they are cleared to be discharged

Elective surgery demand also isn't going anywhere.
Elective surgery doesn't often require ICU stays, thankfully.

Hence the quote marks. If you’re fat and sickly and need what would normally be deemed “elective” you bet your arse is getting sent to ICU for observation

If you can’t see how hospital capacity procedures from around the country pertain to the current situation in MS, that’s on you. There’s no need to keep asking that same ignorant question.

no
They are not keeping anyone in the ICU to “observe”
ICU’s are full, because people are back out working, getting in car accidents, doing things that cause stress and puts them at higher risk for strokes and what not.

Logic. Such a rare thing these days.

quote:Incorrect. This isn’t the norm, but there are neurosurgical and cardiac/vascular surgeries that are considered elective but result in the use of an ICU bed.

There's something endemic which is immediately extrapolable?
It's a serious question, I'm not being a dick.

Let’s be honest.... most hospitals are lacking anything and everything as is. This health crisis is only showing how badly run most medical facilities are run.
Posted on 7/9/20 at 9:02 pm to Eightballjacket
It's not so much about available beds as staff to cover those additional patients. I think Texas has a contingency to bring in military medical staff.

You know darn well these people don’t want to hear any facts or stats about the virus in here... It’s all a conspiracy, remember? This is a right wing forum. They will ignore the facts until it’s too late. They will dig through the web to find some agenda driven post or article to back up the conspiracy theory. They will do their best ignore the facts until they can’t anymore. I really hate to see people eat crow when this virus comes home to roost. People have been saying, “but the death rate is next to nothing”. Take a look at the deaths reported today in the states that have massive outbreaks right now. They are going up. Let the hospitals get a bit more crowded... Go on ahead and get the news from Facebook and the OT. Stay away from the “News”!! Look at the daily numbers and do your research. It may save your life and your job. Or both!
I just finished “The Great Influenza” on Audible. It’s a great read or listen. It was written well before this event and therefore is not a part of the “Lefts” agenda. The similarities are quite disturbing between the two Viruses and how some Governments ignored what was going on. It seems we have learned nothing from history. The 1918 Virus was much more deadly but they are spreading in a similar fashion and rate. We need to hope it doesn’t mutate the way that one did. Regardless of the death rate, this country will fall into an economic disaster that will cripple Americans for years. We need to wake up quickly! I apologize for posting something that doesn’t fit the narrative.
