2000 MTV VMA's broadcast is a fascinating time capsule

So, MTV aired, in full the 2000 VMA's the other day (they literally are playing 20 yr old stuff b/c they have no other shows), but the broadcast was truly fascinating.
Eminem was the biggest act there, obviously he had just released his second "real slim shady" album and had a pretty iconic performance on the night.
But the second biggest musical act there was Fred f-ing Durst. Classic red Yankees cap and all. Limp Bizkit won best rock video and then the bass player from Rage Against the Machine climbs the set during their speech.
The 2 Wayans hosting were flabbergasted at what was going on. I think they made some off color jokes or something and mtv cut them out.
Boy bands everywhere. N'Sync won all the awards and you could tell the rest of the group hated Timberlake because he was getting all the attention.
Pre Kanye/50 cent rap so the category was crap. Sisqo Thong Song won like 2 awards. Amazing.
Britney Spears and Christina Aguilara, who obviously hated each other, presented an award together.
Jim Carey got the biggest ovation of the night when he presented Eminem. He was the biggest star in the whole building that night.
And most of all, the show took place in September 2000, just 2 months before a giant presidential election... And the only mention of politics on the entire 3 hour show, was Pink (who has amazingly outlasted all of the acts on the night) said she would vote for Jim Carey for President.
I don't know if the show is available to watch on mtv website, but if it is, I would recommend it.. Especially if you were a teenager or kid during this time. MTV was still a gigantic force of nature and has become a total shell of itself.

MTV has fallen completely apart over the past decade. Even in the mid to late 00s it was still a decent channel.

When Rob and Big started I don't think Rob ever imagined he'd get the whole network to himself but that's where MTV is now.

I think I am remembering this correctly, but I believe Bill Simmons (or maybe it was the Ringer Dish podcast) did a podcast on that VMA when the Ringer did a series of podcast based on the the year 1999.

that was the night the Rage Against The Machine broke up. Zach De La Rocha was furious at Commerford's stunt.
Also Eminem's Real Slim Shady performance that night is one of the all time GOATs.

Some of those categories were absolutely loaded.
I still love that back then there was a strong dilenniation between rap and hip hop... Now it's all just one thing.
But Sisqo was not a rapper at all.
I also miss Kid Rock a lot. There was a part after the Rage bassist stunt wherr they actually had to bring Carson Daly in to host a segment of the show because the Wayans didn't know what to do.
Daly was just chilling in the audience with Durst and a drunken Kid Rock holding a Heineken, then said "but what did that guy want? Wolrd peace? Cure for poverty? At least give us something?"
It was hilarious, classic Kid Rock at his height.
Eminem also dropped loads of pills out of his pockets on purpose during his first award as he "was looking for his speech"

Everything is pop now, it all sounds the same. I can't stand today's music. Rap is garbage, rock is dead, R&B is pretty much dead.

The video of the year nominees was STACKED
I was glad Eminem won at the time.
Loved the video for All the Small Things, Blink always had the funniest videos.
Bye Bye Bye is one of the only songs I liked from NSYNC and although they weren't really my thing, it was a good one.
I think Californication has stood the test of time the most. That was a stunning video and it's still really, really good. Also helps that the song itself is great.

Hate to be the get off my lawn guy but you are absolutely right. Hot garbage is the only way to describe what’s put out these days. Just reading that list is nostalgic. Craziest part is I remember almost everyone one those videos just reading the track title. I can’t tell you the last time I saw a music video. Do they make them still?

Just a few weeks ago I randomly listened to Say My Name by Destiny's Child (Beyonce and Kelly Rowland plus whoever else was in it at that time).
I then realized that song is 21 years old. That just absolutely blows my mind the song is THAT old.
Music was so good back then. The music was just fun. From DMX Party Up to Forgot About Dre to Kid Rock and Aaliyah. It was just such a great time in America and the vibe that the music had back then in pre-9/11 and really pre-internet days was pure magic.

Would rather the 90s award shows

That video won the best video direction VMA on the night for a reason. It was ackward seeing two very humble, very average looking filmmakers get on stage when the rest of the winners were all flashy, loud, semi-idiots who were all drunk/high on the night.

Aside form the angry teenage boy stiff from Limp Bizkit/Korn, I would say "fun" is the perfect way to describe the early 00s era of music, especially after the rap-rock stuff died arond 2002.
The hip hop was very very fun. Nelly first two albums were nothing but club songs, and so was 50 Cent's first couple albums. Jamie Fixx even had huge, fun hits.
Kanye's stuff just grooved.
It all changed around 2010-ish with Drake and the emo/depressing synth sound. It's been shite since.

Rap was already on a slow decline but it really fell off a cliff around 2012/2013. There is no more originality anymore. There's no West Coast, East Coast sound, it all just blends together with Southern rap but it all sounds the same.
I liked Drake's early stuff from 2009/2010 but his music just isn't my thing.

You left out the other most important event of that night.
Fred Durst got on stage with Christina Aguilara to perform and effectively killed mainstream rock, and his career at the same time.

I'm old enough to remember the good old days when Arsenio Hall was the best host ever. Dennis Miller and Dana Carvey were good too.

Aaliyah... would've been what Beyonce ended up being popularity wise. Beyonce doesn't blow up if Aaliyah doesn't die.
The 99 VMAs were better.

A travesty that Juvenile didn’t win this category.
