It's been a few years since I've looked at all this stuff, but to the best of my recollection, STATE law REQUIRES that any new city names a Chief of Police.
But it doesn't require the creation of a Police force beyond that.
I would HIGHLY suggest they DO NOT form a police force. Its a duplication of services that EBRSO already provides and does a good job of already.
IF STG creates a police force, that will be a big mistake, and in a few years, it will become a bureaucracy and create a union.
Not knocking my friends in BRPD, but the BRPD Union is run by shite bags and protects shite bag cops.
The best way for STG to live up to the promises they made is to absolutely STARVE their own government. Offer robust services that are contracted out to private business and hold them accountable.
EBRSO has jurisdiction in every inch of EBRP, including ANY city within its boundaries.
BRPD is basically the law enforcement arm of the Mayor's office.
In theory, it could be disbanded with a vote of the EBR Metro Council and if the Mayor would veto it, enough votes by the MC to override that veto.
EBRSO would need to staff up a bit and make sure they had the funds / resources to cover the area, but it could be done and it wouldn't be that difficult.

NEVER believe Stephenie Riegel on her hit pieces on SG
Posted on 6/18/20 at 12:39 am to topdollarbill
SG proposes an extra $4M in their proposed budget to do just that.

It will be up to St. George voters to get rid of the miscreants that JBE appoints to the council and Mayor positions and they choose to attempt to make their temporary appointments permanent.
This is where we could've used Eddie Rispone in the Governor's office.
Elections have consequences.

I could be wrong, I’m no expert, but i don’t believe JBE appoints anyone for the city. I believe this bill just ensures STG has a city. Elections will determine who runs it. Again, I could be wrong, but this is a direct dagger to Broomestick and her minions that just want to use StG as a piggy bank.

Whole thing started over getting an Independent School district.
lol. Sure, just like Bodi White's movement to pull Central out of BREC was a legitimate attempt to create an independent park system and not a ploy to get BREC to buy part of his land and develop other parts and triple his money. They had their eyes set on incorporation the whole time. Schools were the excuse. Now they dont need the schools and legally speaking nothing about incorporation helps create an ISD unless you get your legal advice from SWB.

Then it grew into lack of services and a lot of tax dollars are generated in this are while not being spent in the area.
This is laughable. Most of the big money infrastructure improvements were in South baton rouge. Look at all the highway widening and extensions that were implemented and it was disproportionately in favor of the current SG area. Same for public-private partnerships that Kip was involved with. He helped steer those projects and hospitals more in the direction of South Baton Rouge/SG.
The SG area pays lower taxes than virtually most anyone else in the metro area yet gets trash twice a week, better drainage, lower permitting fees, and over-all better service than Livingston Parish.
It's laughable that people keep saying that the SG area was getting screwed when the North Baton Rouge folks have been complaining that Kip only cared about downtown and South Baton Rouge.
Get your own city, thats fine. Its not going to change much except different people will be in control and they'll no doubt hide a lot of it behind privatization in order to keep line item expenses from being subject to public records laws.
In Central they had CH2Mhill subs doing work on politically connected peoples' homes for free and it was all legal somehow.

No, just the mayor and the entire city council.
MOP lives in St. George. I hope he appoints her.

There is absolutely no reason for the mayor of BR or city council to appoint anyone in another city.
You don’t have to like StG, but guess what, the people spoke. Since it’s still some time before StG can even be viable, set up an election, by the people, to vote for who should represent them.
JBE, SWB or anyone else outside of the StG city limits should have no say in who runs StG. Have an election for any position that controls StG, including if MOP wants to run, and let the chips land where they may. Let the people of the area that will be governed by the officials decide.

John Bel Edwards is the governor of Louisiana. St. George is still part of Louisiana. He will appoint the initial mayor, council, police chief, etc. After that there will be elections.

It’s been nearly a year already, why not let the citizens decide who runs themselves? You are right, JBE is the governor and SWB is the parish president, doesn’t mean they should appoint anyone, especially when SWB is a known opponent of StG. We have elections in a few months, more than enough time to put potential candidates on the ballot. As any election, let the people decide.

Actually the governor appoints a few positions.
Then the state rep appoints some.
Then the state senator.
Then the metro council representative if it is more than one metro council representatives for the area.
All the politicians who represent the area will have a say in the initial government.
As far as drainage it is a joke.
Neglecting the area is not superior drainage.
The City Parish has neglected the area for years.
If you talk to any council member they will tell you the present EBRP DPW is not large enough to handle the present demands with this area and whole parish.

this can't be true. I was told JBE was one of the absolutely worst humans on earth that would fight St. George with everything he had because he had the audacity to choose to put the letter D in front of his name

JBE, is smart enough to know John Alario is not there anymore to control things.
He is going to pick and choose his battles carefully or nothing will be done.
If he wants to get things passed he has to work with a conservative legislative body.

Yes, he isn’t going to waste political capital on a fight he wasn’t going to win. A fight 90% of the state could care less about.
