there were plenty of race riots in the 60s. and yes, it's better now than when jim crow laws were in effect.

Damn I could have sworn I've been hearing that blacks are being hunted like animals now and subjected to systemic racism and that anyone who disagrees with that is the scum of the earth who should be for ced to apologize publicly

is anyone who's saying that, saying it wasn't happening 60 years ago?

I wouldn't say I'm a stickler for screen time, but my son (4YO) and I have some routines to mix it up. I give him situations to ask me questions I guess.

He reads a book or does some simple math before he gets his tablet in the evenings; we go to the library every Tuesday; and on weekends I typically reserve time for some kind of experiment, whether making homemade volcanoes, mashing keys on the piano, or taking apart old appliances.

We spent an hour today making a bottle rocket. Planning to launch that sucker tomorrow.

Really, we just need to delete social media tied to our real identities.

Even early days of Facebook and Twitter were fun. I think if they banished the troll farms and bots it would be a huge leap back to sanity.

Stop ticktocking.

It was harder to do things.

Find out about events and bands..you had to be a dedicated fan which meant you were passionate about whatever it was you were searching out.

Internet is great for information. Its as bad as it is great now.

70s and 80s kid and loved it. The internet and social media killed so many good things.

I’m a stickler for screen time and my 15 and 16 year olds didn’t get phones until 8th grade - but they’re the minority. And while I did allow social media once they got to high school, and I do check it, it’s impossible to police what they are seeing.

It unbelievable. Made college and careers that much easier for sure.

The downside is it probably has more misinformation than fact, and most people can't tell the difference.

I find it amusing that on an INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD we are discussing if life was better before the Internet. But yes, I loved those days of the teacher busting out the TV & VCR cart. I remember in the mid-late 80s being blown away playing The Oregon Trail on the school's Apple IIe.

Internet is fine. Social media is where all the problems come from. Wouldn’t have these problems if Facebook and Twitter didn’t exist to give every Karen of the world an over inflated sense of importance to share their opinion on everything and join the social media attack mob mentality

Yes and no. The internet brought a lot of positives, including easy access to information, connection with far-flung social ties, the ability to find online community, reduced transaction costs, increased capacity for data storage, increased ability to collaborate across time and space, and opportunities to engage in political and/or civic discussion.
.

This is where I’m at. I think to going on a trip in Texas to a big city with my dad as a kid in the 80s.

He’d call ahead and buy tickets to a Rangers game, study a map, cuss in traffic, ask for directions if he had to, and just go with fast food on the side of the highway.

I buy a ticket on the internet, pop in the address in the phone and just arrive there, I’ll find a local place to eat, and my kids don’t know the difference. They just arrive.

On the other hand...

But there are downsides to all of these points, including the prevalence of misinformation, the erosion of face-to-face connection and local community, economic threats to small businesses, threats to privacy, the loss of leisure time due to work-from-home demands, and political polarization resulting from contentious conversations

Social media ruined everything. Everybody thinks their opinions are important and you’re a nazi if you don’t see the world like they do.
