TV shows that changed major characters and benefited...

What shows benefited the most when main characters were changed?
Married with Children automatically comes to mind. Steve Rhodes was a great character, but I feel the show really hit its stride when he left and Marcy married Jefferson Darcy.

Probably Cheers, and for more than one character.

Also the OG Law & Order.
I hated that cast except for Chris Noth & Steven Hill.

While season 1-3 Frank Burns > Winchester, by the time they switched, Frank was played out and it was time for a change.

Not a change but adding Frank to Always Sunny was a major +

Parks and Rec, Knopes love interest from the first season left, was effectively replaced by Ben.

The first few episodes of The Golden Girls they had a male cook/servant type guy and Sophia was just supposed to be a one time or maybe part time character. Her character got over and the cook guy just kind of disappeared.

Not a major character but the Second Morty Seinfeld was light Years better than the forgettable original guy

The Office- Michael Scott from season 1 vs the rest of the series.

I honestly liked Priscella Barnes more than Suzanne Somers who's character they made just so fricking stupid it got really tiresome.
Three's Company seemed to evolve and get smarter and moving away from the forever long gag that he's pretending to be gay living with 2 girls and that Mr. Roper is obsessed about finding out if he's really gay.

Back before a lot of you folks time but "The Honeymooners" didn't start out with Joyce Randolph and Audrey Meadows playing the wives of Art Carney and Jackie Gleason.
Also back in the day, William Bendix didn't start out as the star of "The Life Of Reilley", that was Jackie Gleason's role for a while.
Then in the 60's "Bewitched" swapped out Samantha's husband from Dick York to Dick Sargeant.
In the 70's you had Suzanne Sommers deciding to try her acting chops in film and she left "Three's Company" only to flop and the other gal who replaced her, but that was not beneficial to the show in my opinion.

Psych- Lassiter's female partner was switched to Juliet after the pilot. Pilot detective would not have been nearly as good.
Monk- I liked Sharona, but think ultimately Natalie is better.

Valerie Harper being replaced by Sandy Duncan in a show called “Valerie,” no less. There was a lot of legal wrangling that went on after the move and I think Valerie won the case. Maybe it was Jason Bateman getting a bigger role, but the show seemed much better with Sandy.
