The NBA being a "softer" league doesn't mean the players are less tough

...than the players from previous eras.
I get it. It was a more physical game back then. That is because the rules allowed them to play that way.
They didn't make the rules. They are playing in a system that is already in place. It doesn't make them mentally weaker or unable to be effective during those previous eras.
If skinny arse Reggie Miller can pop off against the Knicks, do you really believe that Kevin Durant can't?

If today's game had the 90s rules and vice versa, we would be talking about how soft the 90s were and how tough the guys playing today are.

Damn, the LeBitch fans are triggered.
The GOAT is 6-0 in NBA finals...played against thugs in Detroit and New York...NEVER needed a GAME 7 to win the tittle.

It’s all about entertainment and product
Rule changes changed the game

NBA players whine more than any other type of athlete. They aren’t tough.

I don’t really care if the league is tougher or not, something had to be done about the dogshit state of basketball circa 2004. It was terrible to watch and the rule changes around defense have provided a more entertaining era

From 2003-05, there were only 3 Finals games in which a team scored 100 points. The point totals were 100, 101 and 102 points.
There were zero finals games in which both teams scored 100+ points. I love basketball, but the period from 94-05 wasn't the most fun to watch.
On OP's point, players adapt. LeBron and Jordan are both examples. LeBron came in during the dead period for offense, did well there and transitioned just fine to today. MJ came in during a high scoring era in the 80's, and transitioned just fine to the low scoring mid-late 90's.

Teams didn't play much defense in the 80s or 90s despite being more violent. The 2017 or 18 Warriors would've spanked the 90s Bulls or 80s Lakers

First time Bron Bron drove the lane of the bad boys he wouldn't have to flop like he always does. Those dudes would of buried the receding hairline wonder into the 3rd row

Tough? What about a guy who is 6’5” guarding bigger men than him in the post and putting up # like this.
James Harden is holding players to 32.1 FG% on post-ups and a scoring frequency of 12.8%
That’s tough if I have ever seen tough.

LeBron weighs 260 and the biggest guy on the Bad Boys was 251.
There were hard fouls in those days that would lead to easier ejections these days, but people act like the Bad Boys were all 300 pound monsters who could get away with ECW moves with no calls.

With this topic, the biggest difference to me is how much the players complain to the refs now vs then. Sure guys like Jordan, Barkley, Shaq, etc. would complain to the refs but you didn't have most of the starters doing any of that, and certainly not the 4th guy off the bench who plays 8 minutes per game. The complaining now is out of control.

quote:The fact that an NBA finals team only scored 54 points is actually ludicrous. If you go back and look at that series a team only broke 90 twice.

Those series with the Cavs, Celtics and Magic in that era were brutal. But the level of defense was like 150x what it was in the 80s and 100x of the 90s

Stop. LeBron would make anyone from the Bad Boys look stupid.

They still took down bigs bigger than Lebron

LeBron's beaten bigger guys than the Bad Boys.
One of LeBron's most dominant series ever was vs this guy:
But people think he couldn't handle this guy:
