I had to look that up. Apparently the inspiration came from the fact that one of Amanda's good friends, a guy who had worked on a couple of her albums, committed suicide in 2019 and it hit her really hard.
So isbell is cucked by a dead guy who killed himself because OMB? That’s like his wet dream

I thought it was ok. I actually think the new American Aquarium album is better.

It is. Isbell is still good but he’s not Americana Jesus anymore.

New American aquarium album is better to me.

I think it is pretty good album. Pretty cohesive and the songwriting is consistently solid. It doesn't have the highs that TNS did, but also avoids the lows.
I get a lot of Mark Knopfler vibes from the album production and guitars, especially on the first half of it, which I definitely enjoy.
"Letting You Go" sounds like a John Prine song. Two albums in a row with a daughter track to close.

I listened to the album 3 times in a row earlier this morning while my wife was at a doctor appointment. My favorite so far is Overseas. As a guitarist, the guitar tone is just incredible.
Later this evening my wife and I caught the tail end of Isbell’s livestream where he played Reunions in its entirety in an acoustic setting with Shires.
“Letting You Go” hit us with a ton of emotion. Brought both of us to tears. My wife and I are in our late 30s, just married last November (both first marriages). She walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of “If we were vampires”. I didn’t know which music she was going to choose and recognized it immediately. Took me everything to hold it together and not cry like a baby. “Cover me Up” and “Vampires” has always been special to us.
We just found out we are expecting and today was our first doctor’s appointment. Sitting in that parking lot for 3 hours waiting for my wife since I couldn’t go inside, I listened to this album 3 times. I truly didn’t feel those lyrics of “Letting You Go” until watching the livestream with my wife.

Is this real life? Holy shite dude. Congrats on the marriage and coming kid, but it’s just some cheesy Jason Isbell music. Get a hold of yourself.
I’ve listen to the album twice and don’t really care for it. A far cry from Southeastern and SMTF, obviously

I don’t see what’s cheesy about Cover Me Up and If We Were Vampires. Those are both fantastic songs.

Agree with general sentiments that it’s missing highs, but consistently good. No generational song or career defining songs. Think a few will help round out his live sets with a little more/better rock. If overseas and be afraid take air time from super 8 I think the shows go up a notch over the long term.
Watching the livestream last night upped my appreciation for the album a bit though.

I was actually quite surprised by the album considering the first two singles released Be Afraid and What have I done to Help are the two weakest songs on the album to me.

After 2 listens this morning, it strikes me as a typical Isbell album. 2 or 3 really good songs, and a bunch of just okay songs.
Overseas
It Gets Easier
Letting Her Go
All good songs. The rest didn't make much of an impression on me after 2 listens, but perhaps they'll grow on me.
Listened a few more times last night. I'm now torn on It Gets Easier. I like the music in it, but I've grown tired of the sobriety songs. I'm glad he's sober and finds inspiration to write songs about sobriety, but they just don't resonate much with me.
Overseas is far and away the best song. Letting Her Go speaks to me because I have a daughter. Running With OUr Eyes closed has a heavy Dire Straits feel to it, and may grow on me. THe rest are forgettable.

Am I the only one who thinks “Only Children” is easily the best track and a top tier Isbell song in general?
Posted on 5/16/20 at 10:22 am to urinetrouble
I think Dreamsicle is a better song than Only Children.
Posted on 5/16/20 at 12:19 pm to urinetrouble
Only Children was my favorite of the singles by far. That being said Overseas is also really good, those are probably my favorite 2 tracks on the album. I think hearing the album live will help me appreciate some of the songs more, it did for the Nashville Sound.

The only song I really really dislike is Be Afraid. Soooo whiny and preachy.
Posted on 5/16/20 at 3:08 pm to TigerFanInSouthland
It's 10 songs long, I immediately like 5 of them and the other 5 were snoozefests.
I know we'll never get "Never Gonna Change" Isbell again, but damn. Give us some rippers and tearers.

I’ve been saying for a few albums that another couple songs that have some punch would help bring his live set up a notch. He’s hemmed himself in a bit with a lack of range there.
