Running Generator without a load

I was running my portable generator this afternoon. My neighbor walks over and we get to talking.
He said you shouldn’t run a generator without a load because it uses up the brushes quicker.
I’ve been having a portable generator for years and had never heard of that.
Does it really make a difference. Don’t see how that matters. Electrical stuff is my weak link.

Construction guys will run a generator all day long and only have a load when cutting something with a power tool.

I have no experience with small gas generators but I would assume this thought comes from large deisel generators where if you run them or test them w/out a load, it can end up wet-stacking the generator.
I don't think that should be an issue for a gas generator and the brushes comment doesn't make much sense, either.

Don't know if it makes a difference or not, but when I run mine, I usually plug a sawzall or something in and run it for a minute or so just to make sure it's putting out power.
But I'm pretty sure it doesn't hurt anything to just let it run unloaded.

You're neighbor sounds like an idiot, but why are you running the generator without a load?
If you are just running as a monthly run check, then you need to put a load on it, or you didn't actually run the generator portion of your "generator".

This would be true if it was a DC motor running 24/7 in an industrial plant after about 6 months to a year. Doesnt sound like you meet that criteria.
