Besides MJ (because thats been talked to death)
Would there be a more perfect player to drop into todays game than Pistol Pete?
The guy could shoot from anywhere, he had great handles, and could pass Average a career 24.2 in the NBA without a 3 point line, and went 10-15 the one year he had it.
He was 6' 5" and could move.
This guy could have been another Steph Curry or more in todays game.

I guess we'll just continuously do the "x" player in "y's game" until sports come back

Having great handles in the 70s means you could dribble the ball a little bit with your off hand.
90% of the guards in today’s NBA have better handle than Pete did. But that’s just what happens as sports progress.

Maravich and Dr J are the only 2 I think would do better in todays game than in their own day. Ahead of their time, and can you imagine pistol being allowed the extra step, allowed to carry the ball like they do now, and a 3 point line?

Yeah - that’s BS. Sorry.

Maybe you should watch some Maravich tape and get back to us.

Maravich was a highly inefficient chucker who was a turnover machine and had enormously high usage rates so maybe Russell Westbrook with better three-point shooting?

If he was healthy, he would have been one of the greats
I still consider him one of the greatest basketball players of all time, at any level

I’ve watched a significant amount of it. He’s incredible to watch.
But we’ve somehow decided that basketball is the only sport on the world, where players from the 70s are just as good as now. For his era, Pete’s handle was absolutely incredible. But the training now is so much more knowledgeable and efficient.

A lot of the old school greats aren't super efficient outside post players.
The premise of the OP is that he is being coached in a modern approach of shooting 3s driving the basket, and cutting out less efficient long 2s.

George Gervin.

If Steve Nash came into the league 15 years later, his reputation would be even better. His assist numbers would drop some, but they'd have him shooting a ton more. He's a career 43% shooter from three. He could easily have averaged 20-25 on stupid efficiency in today's NBA, and his basketball IQ/vision remains elite.

Because the players are allowed to Palm & carry the ball while dribbling in today's NBA. Ball handling rules were much stricter pre 1980's.

I’d love to see maravich play in today game because he was a hell of shooter.
He only played with the three for 3 years. Today he would jacking shots up

Pete would have been a great Harlem Globetrotter - he was a good circus act.
Name one team he played on, that he made others around him better.
There's a reason why all the teams he played on were mediocre at best.
Apologies in advance to all the boomers I know I've offended.

Well LSu was 3-23 before he could play ont eh varsity squad.
they went 14-12, 13-13 and 22-10 while he was there.
Then 14-12 AND 10-16 without him.

I don't think many other players from that era would thrive in today's game. Only Maravich and a few others like Dr J. I think that was the point the OP was making. Maravich would be better in todays game than his own time, because the loose ball handling rules and up tempo game would fit right into his wheel house.

can you even name one of his teammates that was any good? He was always the star with no supporting cast. And even those resented him for his contract.
At one point the Hawks signed Dr J for an off season (ABA sued for his rights so he was never able to play the regular season), and the 2 of them together was supposedly spectacular. Pete needed teammates on his level, not ones that would deflect his no look passes out of bounds. Another reason he'd be better in today's game.

I take exception to people dismissing his ball handling skills when the modern game ( since the 80's / 90's) allows carrying/ palming.
