Pandemic boredom resulting in wanting to get a new acoustic-electric <$1000. Gonna go into Guitar Center this weekend (they are open in GA) and try some stuff out, but does anyone have any experience with an Epiphone AJ-45ME LINK , or these new Martin D-X2E LINK ?

If you're in the under $1k range, I would consider Seagull - just on the insane value.

But, whatever Fret Shack says, go with that and ignore me.

Have you considered buying used? Can get some killer deals on Reverb or Facebook Marketplace locally.

That is The Epiphone Masterbilt, it's not your standard Epiphone. They are incredible guitars. I have had that exact same model, and it is one guitar that I have always regretted trading off. They are made in China, but they use some very good materials on those, and really great quality control. It's all solid materials, hand built to the specs of an old Gibson J-45.

They are great instruments, I loved the way that guitar boomed. I keep hoping that I will come across another one at the right time. You probably will need to adjust the action when you buy it, they come set pretty high.

Other than that, I agree with Ace, It's hard to beat The seagulls.

Edit: Looks like they moved the Masterbilt production to Indonesia. That's even better.

I am a big Seagull fan for pure value and bang for the buck, but play everything in your price range and run with what hits on all cylinders for you. I say that because Martin, Taylor, Seagull, Breedlove, Epi, Yamaha ... a LOT of companies have pretty good guitars under a grand at GC. The Mexican made Taylors and to a degree the MIM Martins, for example, are solid guitars with soundboard voicings and electronics comparible to their US counterparts.

Don't ignore the used wall too for the "2" factor. You'll get 2x the guitar for your purchasing power getting a used guitar. Or you'll pay about 1/2 of what you'd expect to pay for the same guitar if you get a used example.

All of this.

Tons of companies make great guitars, I'm more of Martin guy and I like Yamahas too but Taylor and Seagull and others have some great offerings under $1,000.

Its all personal preference.

I needed a new acoustic.

I went to GC yesterday and popped $140 for a new Epiphone. No electronics, just a small, light acoustic good for playing around with in the living room.

Ended up going with a Taylor 110E. That masterbilt wasn’t going to ship until July.

Yeah, they don't build them on an assembly line. That's why you don't come across many of them. I've only come across 1 new one at a small shop in Manhattan, Kansas, and they wouldn't come down to a price that I could pay. I've never seen another used one for sale.
Guitar Center never has them in stock, but if they stay at that price for a little while, I will probably order one soon. I need my butt kicked for trading that one off, but I was trying to trade for a really nice old Strat. I don't even play the Strat.

Yamahas are good. The TAs are good too. I just feel you really have to pick it up and play it. I’ve come across some Yamaha duds too.

Of course actually sitting to play one could be said for all guitars at all price points.

I bought my Alvarez from Amazon and just got lucky.

A used Martin MMV can be gotten for less than $1000. One of the best acoustic values IMO.

I’m seeing a used 90s seagull s6 on reverb for 300. But man I hate their headstocks.

Yeah, it's kind of an ugly design, great guitars though.

Yep, ugly enough to never be truly interested.

And I'm sure (beyond a doubt) that they play really well.

I've got an older one, that I got used for 200 bucks. It's an entourage rustic model( satin finish) cherry sunburst, cutaway acoustic with really good electronics. It's a great guitar, at 200 bucks, they made me buy it.

I should rephrase perhaps.

If just starting out or looking for a beater to take outdoors, the boat, or a campfire that sort of thing then by all means. However my first was a stellar Yairi that a good friend practically gave away, when he started upgrading to D28's and Golden Era's. Just to get me to play. So there was no way to go but up after starting at pretty high standard. Couple people have even asked if it's in the will?

I know Seagull likes their headstock, claim it helps with tuning... yadda yadda. But same with all my other guitars. None of them de-tune themselves or wander around. They also tend to have a wider fret board which I'm not a fan of. And yes, that's also a factor in what you're use to playing or learned on.
