Denver based, but I’m willing to bet this is an issue in every major city in the country. So today I was going to through a drive through, and as I’m driving up to the second window, some homeless dude goes up to it and begins harrassing the drive through employees for free food and drinks for 10 minutes. He finally left when they gave him a free fountain drink. Then on my way back home, some guy on god who knows what is dancing around in the median, and then jumps in front of my moving car. Have to slam on the breaks thanking god no one was tailgating me, and laid out a dog cussing I haven’t laid out in a while, with his response being “Hey man don’t be hatin”.

I’ve seen shite like this all last week. These homeless people are just trying to get hit by cars, and now that basically no one is giving them cash they’re going completely crazy. But here’s the main reason this is happening, not because they’re out of cash or are on more drugs, but because the cops refuse to go anywhere near them. They’d at least disperse them before this hit, but now these people are so disease ridden and crazy that the cops are just avoiding them entirely, which makes the homeless now thinking they can get away with anything.

Hey, cops your job is to “protect and serve”. Serve the tax payers by protecting me from the homeless and them from themselves. This situation has gotten completely out of control.

I was in Denver in January and went downtown and was amazed at the size of the homeless crowd hanging out on the streets and setting up camp.

Yes, but not like Denver. I’ve visited Denver each summer for 10 straight years. It’s amazing how much has changed, even in just the downtown area. That is what happens when you cater to the homeless. They stay.

Austin is bad. Seattle is bad. SF is bad.

My experiences in other big cities: Houston, Dallas, SA, Phoenix, El Paso, Chicago, NYC, etc, etc. lead me to think this is out of hand in a select few. Sure, the places I listed have homeless issues, but my trips and stays gave me the impression that in some cities, the homeless people keep to themselves and don’t feel the need to inject their issues into mainstream society on a daily basis.

Most of the rise of homeless people that are harassing everyone isn’t due to COVID. More to do with heroin

I once lived in Denver and, believe me, the bums didn’t just shoe up when the covid virus showed up.

I’m not saying it’s rising (although it in all likelihood is), I’m just saying they’re getting even more ballsy and crazier because the cops aren’t doing their damn jobs. Haven’t seen them hanging out in the median, but saw like 8 last week.

Every time this topic comes up we all are reminded that homelessness is a problem in large cities. Can anyone identify a city with a population of 1,000,000 or more that doesn’t have homeless issues?

It's going to be a real problem in most urban areas in getting things started back up. The homeless population is going to be a major factor in keeping infections going stronger.

The neighborhood where I live in Brooklyn seems like it would be ready to start opening things up right away since a high percentage are people acting very responsibly.

However, when I go to my record shop between homeless people going nuts with police wanting nothing to do with them and 20-somethings acting like a few days of lowered cases means the flood gates can open it seems ripe for this going on forever.

So glad I live in the location I do and don't ever see a single homeless person unless I venture out to the Dallas area.

Homeless problem in Denver was exacerbated by legalization of weed. Which I am for BTW.

They haven’t been jumping out in the middle of the street until now.

In parts of Brooklyn, they are certainly a lot more noticeable right now. Big groups in places you normally may see them here and there but with a low profile.

I think a big issue is that such a large number are avoiding homeless shelters out of fear of catching the virus or just getting quarantined.
