Doing something against your team?
- perfect game
- no hitter
- cycle
- 5 touchdowns
- 500 yards passing
- 80 points
- 5 goals in hockey

Etc......

Watching Randy Johnson throw a perfect game against the Braves and the fans are giving him a standing ovation

I have for hockey many times for milestone achievements.

And in rugby, yes, for retirements, achievements, etc.

None of those.

I do clap for opposing players when it's clear they aren't seriously injured or get carted off. That's just showing respect and not wishing that an opponent gets hurt.

I can't see myself cheering for someone's achievement against my team.

Depends on the sport, the player, what's going on in the game, etc. I feel like with baseball you'll generally see more of this because each game by itself isn't all that important generally. It's also just part of baseball and always has been.

Maybe a perfect game for a single-game achievement, but I would for something like an all-time record or a legend's final game as a visitor.

Fans that want to be known as the smartest, best fans love to brag about cheering for the opposition. So basically lsu baseball and st Louis cardinals.

I will applaud opponents for:

Getting Up/Leaving the field due to injuries
Retirement (IE recognizing a great player during their final season)
Career achievements (IE all time passing/hitting/scoring/etc records)

Am I cheering someone for a historic performance while beating the shite out of my team?
NO

I should have included these two as well. As long as someone doesn't break a scoring record with a game winner, I'll show respect for career achievements.

Just no single game achievements.

Maybe because they love their team but are just out the to have a good time.

The idea that you need to be an a-hole to be a true fan has never clicked with me.

Victory lap for denying your team a trip to Omaha

If you announce that you're a good fan base because you cheered an opposing pitcher, you're probably an a-hole.

Or not. More sanctimonious than anything, though.

I don't know if a card fan started a thread on it or not, but when Pujols visited last season, got a standing ovation, then was applauded after a homerun, we got tons of shite for that.

Depends how likable the player is I guess.

Yes to the perfect game for sure.

ETA: only after the game. Definitely wouldn’t be standing while he’s facing the last few batters.
