I would not be surprised if there was some initial general accuracy, especially during the exponential phase. They wanted their citizens to take it seriously and quarantine.
I have thought China came to a point where they decided they wanted to get their economy back on track, and the best way to do that is to say it's OK to go back to work, and they started suppressing the numbers big time then.

So I should take with a grain of salt China reporting yesterday they only had five deaths? Does some official with our government thinks we're so dumb that they have to tell us about trusting China. This is where I’m sort of at a loss. We aren’t talking a completely closed society like N Korea. We are talking about a place (yes, albeit a totalitarian regime) where we have thousands of Americans on the ground there at any given time and untold business assets in the country.
If our intelligence assets don’t have the capability to know, at least in a general sense, what is really going on there, then what the hell are they good for?
