Because they sell raw unrefrigerated wild animals or because people are close to each other?

Edit: I can't unsee the pictures in reply. Wow

Do we really need to discuss how eating raw bats is bad for you?

Hell. Bats in general.

If it walks, flies, swims, or crawls someone is selling it to someone else for food.
Not everything should be food.

I made some bat bites the other day.

A little bat meat, wrapped up with some cream cheese and pineapple.

Top it off with some jalapeño ranch and oh man, you got a winner.

From what I've read these places have a lot of small wooden cages stacked on top of each other with many different types of animals in them. Some of the animals are alive and they kill them on the spot and some are already dead and they may be dripping blood and puss on some of the other live animals. It just sounds truly disgusting to me.

Taking a lot of LIVE wild animals and putting them all in the same place is a breeding ground for viruses.

A virus in a bat for instance can mutate and jump to another animal near it. Then mutate again and jump to another animal. And it does this on and in until it is finally in an animal and mutates into a form that can jump to a human.

Because they store live animals of different types one on top of the other. Each shitting onto those below, their stool and germs inundating all the other animals. Cross species transfer of virus and bacteria occurs when in the wild this would be less likely to occur due to the animals not coming into contact. The animal handlers end up getting infected and passing it onto their family, friends etc.

These pandemic breeding grounds came into existence due to the communists promoting them as an alternative food source due to the governments own failure to feed its people. These then became popular in the rich Chinese government officials who now protect their existence.

Are wet markets regulated? If not, I would imagine that if people are able to sell shite without any type of guidelines, then there are probably people selling shite that isn't what they say it is.. That's just one issue.

SOP for restaurants/markets in most of the civilized world:

ETA: Restaurants in the USA make use color-coded knives and cutting boards... and there are protocols for cleaning implements/surfaces as well as hygiene standards for the people working in food-prep areas.

There are no hygiene/cleanliness rules in place at these markets. The amount of BACTERIAL cross-contamination alone is nauseating to me.
