Well yeah, but that goes against the old saying.

A .40 is a shitty compromise between a 9 and .45, ammo less readily available etc. Just a trash round IMHO

But the choice of the 2 would be .45 , both will do what you need them to do

Agree. And I'll add that the .40 will never completely go away, but may be harder to find in the future. 9mm all the way.

I dont understand that viewpoint. It's a pretty good compromise. More horsepower than both the 9 and 45, more capacity than the 45 at the expense of more bark than both of them.

IMO it's a shitty substitute for 10mm, but it's in a good spot where it is. All semi autos should be 357 sig though

The flash-bang of that round makes it the absolute most fun thing to shoot. Everyone else gets range envy. Can’t imagine firing that thing off in a dark hallway.

I don't know that there is a "better". 40 is between 45 and 9mm (it's basically a 10mm just slower). The 40 is smaller but has more velocity and more recoil. Capacity tends to be higher due to size. 45 is larger and slower, but less recoil. I personally find it to be more accurate (depending on firearm) at ranges one would shoot a handgun. I personally don't think the trade offs are worth the benefit of a 40 over a 45, but everyone is different. I like 45's, and if the ammo was cheaper/more available, I would pick 10mm over a 40 S&W. Just my opinion though.

Yea I agree, there isnt enough "better" with any of them to matter much.

All you 45 lovers carrying +p or regular?

45 and 40 >> than 9 mm no matter how much convincing you try to do. More and more women are entering law enforcement and it would look bad if they can’t even handle their firearm so therefore they are shooting a 9mm and told it is the best.

40 will have a bigger wound channel and shoots a bigger bullet faster than a 9 mm. It is more powerful than a 9 mm.

45 will have a even bigger wound channel than the 40 and 9 mm.

There is nothing a 9 mm can ever do to create a wound channel of a 40 and 45. Nothing.

There are plenty of rounds from a 380 and 38 special that meet FBI criteria and has less recoil than a 9 mm.

357> 45> 40 > 9 mm> 38 special> 380

I would shoot the biggest caliber you can control effectively. For most women and small men a 9 mm is a great choice.

When hunting dangerous game and carrying a rifle or side arm in Grizzly country can you imagine someone telling you a smaller caliber with less recoil is so much better. But when the dangerous game is a man they tell you this. It is hilarious.

I'm severely disappointed in the lack of full power ammo out there for the sig. All the duty/self defense stuff is in the ~1350 fps range, and you can get that out of nuclear 9mm stuff.

It should ALL be 1450 fps, matching the old school 357 mag otherwise theres little purpose in 357 sig. I still like the caliber alot, but it isnt nearly as lively as it should be with self defense ammo.

I don't like +p in anything other than 9mm. .40 is snappy enough and with 45, you're chasing the needle. You're already opting for big and slow. That's .45 ACP's bag, baby.

It works for 9mm if the pistol can handle a regular diet of it (like Classic Sigs ). Gives it little more oomph outside of ideal ranges.

My truck gun is .45 ACP and I have Hornady Critical Defense + P's in it.

Carry gun(s) are a choice of a couple 9's and a .380 depending on how I'm carrying.

A 5" 357 Mag revolver w/ full power 125 gr loads has flash-bang that's memorable, as well.

The most important factor is shot placement so get something you can shoot accurately regardless of the round. As someone else already mentioned, 9mm fits most people best because it suits female shooter. if your pistol is built to handle 40 cal (sig p229 etc), you should have no problem.

forgot to highlight the fact that comparing calibers, straight across is like comparing cars. Example .40 vs. .45
is like comparing a mustang to a camaro without any further details, such as what year, what engine etc. etc.. no way to do an apples to apples comparison without the specifics. Without going into a deep dive, comparing specific bullet performance will get you closer to what you are looking for..example the .45 230gr Fed. HST vs. the .40 180 gr. Fed. HST. While not the end all be all method, this will get you very good info that is actual fact vs. the "this is better than that because ________.
