Should DiNardo have started Herb Tyler instead of Jamie Howard?

Jamie Howard got his revenge against Auburn in a 12-6 classic in which he played virtually mistake free football, but LSU was just 4-4-1 under Howard going into mid-November.
And then came Herb Tyler, who played extremely well and commanded the Tigers to a 3-0 record in LSU’s final three games, including a 28-0 triumph over SEC West Champion Arkansas, and a 45-26 win in the Independence Bowl.
Starting a true freshman isn’t ideal, but it’s hard for me to believe Herbie wasn’t ready after seeing him in those final three games. Would he have risen to the occasion in front of 80k-Plus against Auburn? It certainly appeared as if he was capable.
How much better would the Tigers have faired if Herb Tyler was the QB the entire season?
I believe he would have gotten wins against South Carolina and Kentucky, so that puts us at 8-3. I also believe he could have beaten Bama, but maybe I’m overstepping. We only lost 10-3, and perhaps his mobility could have pushed us to say a 13-10 victory.
What say you?

Jamie Howard is the GOAT LSU QB. He's a hero to this program. He is a god amongst men on campus.
I hope his highly rated QB son is reading this

No Howard was having a really good year. He personally played well enought to beat the old SWC Texas A&M at Kyle Field in the opener. A&M was ranked #3 at the time. Played great against Mississippi St. (W) and Auburn (W). His only "off" game was against South Carolina, but drove LSU down for a late game-tying TD for a frustrating tie. Played well enough against Florida in a loss (2 TD's called back), which is the game he was injured. He DIDN'T play in a loss at Kentucky or a win vs N. Texas. Started the game at Alabama and was playing well until he re-injured his shoulder. He didn't play again. All of the games Herb Tyler won that year a healthy Jamie Howard would have.
Also, Tyler would NOT have beaten Alabama. He played most of the game regardless.

Personally I've never blamed Jamie for all those pics, that was on the coaches

No, based on all those Hollywood "go back in time scenarios",
You would change the Timeline and might prevent LSU getting 3 National Championships, including the greatest college football season ever for a team

One of my earliest memories in life was my dad and uncles cursing Jamie Howard in our living room through the TV

Should Les Miles have started Matt Flynn instead of JaMarcus Russell?

I thought Jamie Howard broke his collarbone against Bama that year?

Howard was injured because the OL allowed other teams to hit him in the head. That’s why he didn’t start, not by coach’s choice.

Jamie had a great arm and would have had a much better time in Baton Rouge if he’d only had a better OC or a “passing game coordinator” like he we had last year...

That was an era where starting true freshmen was largely taboo and starting a true freshman QB was almost unheard of.

Nothing against Jamie, but I think Herb Tyler was a much better QB, even as a freshman.

Jamie Howard was a talented quarterback, if LSU would have had good coaching back then he could have been very good!

Howard was hurt late in the Florida game the week before. Melvin Hill started the UK game, which was an offensive abomination. Tyler certainly would have made a difference in that one.

If not for Jamie Howard at the beginning of the year, The magic would never have returned.....

Melvin Hill
That was the name I couldn’t remember.
Some of my memories from LSU 90s football have been lost because I have to memorize a lot of chemical plant BS so I can make a living.
Anyway, Melvin Hill was absolutely dreadful in that game. His fake handoff move was laughable, and so was his throwing accuracy. I don’t remember what kind of performance Kevin Faulk or Kendall Cleveland had in that game, but it had to have been hampered due to no passing game whatsoever.
One more thing about LSU vs Kentucky: That was the last time I went to TCI to get a filter or special cable box and TigerVision actually worked.
I paid 34.95 (or at least my mom did, I was still in my teens) in 1996 vs Ole Miss and in 1997 vs Vanderbilt and TigerVision was still scrambled. Had to listen to both games on WJBO instead. The Vandy game ended up being super competitive, so I missed being able to see a hell of a game.
